Vista forgets start menu settings after every restart

Hi!

I have a problem that is quite annoying; every time I restart the computer,
the programs in the automatically populated list on the left side of the
start menu are replaced with the default ones (Windows Media Center, Windows
Media Player ...).

I remove every one of them and the list populates correctly from programs
that I run. But when I restart, all is lost.

Is there a setting somewhere to be fiddled with?

Also, and assume it is unrelated, I keep getting the blue screen (of death)
regarding IRQL "not less or equal".

I appreciate your help.

I don't know if this is the answer to your problem, but u could give it a
try. Right click on Taskbar > properties > start menu > then tick the
privacy box "Store and display a list of recently opened programs" Good
luck

I appreciate the effort, Casandra. The setting you mentioned was already set
correctly. See my reply to my own post for a possible solution to my problem.
Thanks again!
