Vista Folder Icon Question ?

T

Tommy

Hi Everybody.

I would like to embed a "Folder Icon" into each of my music folders.
The folder icon is placed inside the folder and I have assigned that icon to
the folder the average way but the path to that icon which is shown in the
hidden desktop.ini file is an absolute path.
This means that if the folders get transferred to another PC to a different
drive with different drive letter the icons wont display.
Is there a way to embed the icon or assign the icon with an absolute path?
Hope someone here can give me a hand here.

Thanks in advance,
Tommy

Try this.
Open the icon file with Paint and save it with a new name and a new path to
the folder in question.

........thanks for your reply but 1st of all you can't save files in ico
format with Paint and even if I could and save the file with a different name
the path which is inside the hidden desktop.ini wont be correct anymore so
what's the use to do that.
The icon file is allready inside the folder so what you mean by saving it
with a different path?
If I misunderstood you please be more specific......thanks
again.......Tommy.......

Open the icon file with Paint AND resize it to 32 x 32. Save it as
filename.bmp then rename it filename.ico. Then change the folders icon using
the new file.
If the folder is transferred to another PC you will still have the useable
icon file in the folder.

.......ok I can follow you now but I have changed the default Vista icon with
a 256x256 icon which displays cover album art and I want to be able to
display icons in this resolution when needed because sometimes it's easier
for me to enlarge the folder icons because of my eyesight.
The icons are created with "Axialis Icon Workshop" in resolutions of 256x256
- 48x48 - 32x32 and 16x16 and if the folders be transferred to another PC
which runs on Vista as well I want them to display in this resolution too and
I think just 32x32 wont do it.
Isn't there a way to embed an icon to a folder, I mean there must be but how?
Thanks again and I hope you have an idea to get this done
properly.......Tommy.......

........I gave it try but as I thought it wont work because a 32x32 icon wont
display as 256x256 Vista icon.
By the way, the default Vista icons contained in the imageres.dll are
256x256 - 64x64 - 48x48 - 40x40 - 32x32 - 24x24 - 22x22 and 16x16.
All these resolutions are available in 1 icon and how could it be possible
that a 32x32 icon will display crystal clear as 256x256?
Anyway, I appreciate your help but I think if it would be possible to modify
the path to that icon from absolute to relative could work or even better to
embed the icon but I don't know how to do it.
If you or someone else got an idea how to do it please let me know.
Thanks again.......Tommy.......

Did you try 32 x 32?

........can you give me a hint how to specify 32x32 in Paint?
I can't find the option to resize to that resolution.
Paint got only %.......

I am referring to %.

........if I open the ico file in Paint it is about 0.5x0.5 cm which is very
small and when I then resize to 32%x32% you hardly can see the icon anymore
so that didn't work.
Or did you mean to open the 256x256 image that I used to create the icon and
resize that to 32%x32% then save as bmp and rename afterwards to ico...?...

Yes.

.......I think I did now exactly everything that you suggested.
I opened an image 500pixelx500pixel in Paint and resized it to 32%x32% then
saved it as 24 bit Bitmap bmp file.
Renamed the extension to ico and replaced the previous icon with this one
but when I moved it to another PC it didn't display because of the same
reason as before, the path inside the desktop.ini was not correct anymore.
When I removed the desktop.ini then there was an average Folder icon which
also contained the icon image but this is not what I wanted because I wanted
to replace the folder icon with an icon image of my choice.
If I did something wrong please let me know.......thanks again very much for
your help......Tommy.......
