The Damn Folder Icons

L

What is a quick solution to fixing the Vista Folder Icons. They
suddenly change to regular yellow folders. I have read all the stuff
about creating a new desktop.ini (hidden file) and putting it in the
foler and making it hidden and on and on and on but even doing that
does not seem to fix the icons on the start menu. Even after all of
that nonsense the icons on the start menu are not corrrect when you
hover over them. Its maddening that Microsoft does not issue a patch
for this.

I rebooted and that used to fix all of the problems but now its back.
MUSIC, PICTURES, DOCUMENTS and the Root computer folder on the start
menu (Grey bar on the right when you click the start marble) are all
yellow folders.

MICROSOFT, are you LISTENING GOD please fix this its making me and
probably many others really nuts.

Delete the iconcache.db file in C:\Users\XXXXuser\AppData\Local

Reboot.

The icon cache will be rebuilt and the icons should again be what they are
intended to be.

I tried this, all are fine except the DESKTOP icon, which remains the yellow
folder :-(
Vista (D)\Users\XXXXMe\Desktop
1 little folder icon can be very annoying;-)

Cant wiat to try this, no its not a little annoying its VERY annoying.
The brag about the new aeroglass desktop and you constantly get yellow
folder icons. Come on ! 4 years in development and here comes the
new aero glass desktop. LOL,

The Mac Icons dont change. (could not resist)

Now lets see if this fixes my problem.

I will let you know.

Install just one improperly written crappy application and it could corrupt
the icon cache. I found a small free app about 3 years ago that would do it
every time it was installed on a Windows XP computer - any XP computer.
Needless to say I deleted the program installer from my downloaded files so
I would never be tempted to try it - yet again.

Use "only" well know and respected retail programs and you will seldom have
this problem.

Maybe those who program for Apple computers have to submit their programs to
a 1000 point test by Apple. But, there are thousands of PC programs for
every Apple program. Microsoft just could not do that. (-:

Thanks I deleted the cache file and rebooted. I was about to write
that the icons on the start menu where still wong and then suddenly I
clicked again and they were all correct except for the one for the
root computer. So damn odd. So I got excited and thought that now
they would all be OK except the computer one but now I looked at the
folder icons and they are still wrong :( See attached picture.

So why not release a program that restores them. Since I have had
Vista this has been happening to me since the beta days and is still
going on. This may have happened to me in XP once every 3 or 4 years.
In vista it happens for me weekly. Did not mean to say Apple was
better just frustrated over this annoyance. Even if you change to
windows classic theme and then back still no luck.

Its so basic and not really improtant but since vista brags about its
new aero glass desktop the icons should at least stay the defualt dont
you agree ?

Well I will continue looking for a fix. My fear is that I will get it
fixed and then install a program and it will start all over again. I
really think someone at microsoft needs to write a more perpenant fix.

THanks for letting me vent.

Microsoft doesn't fix, they patch. A subtle but important difference
and part of the reason Vista is a ridiculous 50 million lines of
bloated code.

Windows Explorer is a classic example. It's been broke for over a
decade. While Microsoft keeps changing it around and does add some new
features, it never really digs out the bad code to replace it, and
REALLY fix it because to do that would be like pulling on a loose
thread on some garment... you never know where it's going to end. So
Microsoft just patches bugs which often result in slower performance
because the overall size of Windows keeps getting bigger and thus more
bloated plus the unwanted side effect of a patch may be while fixes
one particular problem it can often mess up something else and so on,
and so on and so on.

No joy and very annoying. Any other ideas. My folder icons are still
wrong and the ones in the start menu on the right when you hover over
them is also wrong.

If you're feeling exceptionally 'geeky' you can try deleting the icon
cache to force a rebuild:

1) Launch an elevated CMD window, by using right click, 'Run as
Administrator' to open a command prompt.
2) Shutdown Explorer.exe from the Processes tab in the Task Manager
3) In the CMD window go to C:\Users\<ProfileName>\AppData\Local
4) Type: attrib -H IconCache.db (Hit enter)
5) Type: del IconCache.db (Hit Enter)
6) Type: start explorer (Hit enter)
7) Reboot

This did not work either.

Run command prompt with administrator privileges.

Type chkdsk c: /f which will repair logical disk corruption.

Type Y when asked if you want to run the check on the next reboot.
X out of the window.

Reboot.

Did that do anything?

Hello Richard thanks for trying to help me. Here is the latest. I
deleted all of the desktop.ini files in each of the folders. I
deleted the .db files in the user directory and I manually reassigned
all the icons one at a time pointing to the imageres.dll and the
folders are now working and I rebooted several times. I did do a
clean disk and cleaned out the temp files and the thumbnail images.

Now all is workig except the small icon in the drop down menu for the
computer name. For example my computer name is JAMES so it would be
USER\JAMES to show the root of all of these folders (Music, downloads
documents etc)

COMPUTER >>> LOCAL DISK >>>>> USERS

does show the small book like icon or JAMES and the lower left cornor
does show the "JAMES FILE FOLDER" with the correct icon (GOD SO CLOSE
TO HAVNG THIS FIXED I CAN ALMOST TAST IT) :)

But the >> next to COMPUTER in the drop down menu shows it as a yellow
folder not the green vista icon. I created a guest account thinking
this may be the way it is but the guest account does show the small
book like icon. What controls the small book like icon for the
computer folder in the drop down menus ?

Thanks for all your help
