How do I change the icon for a specific folder or drive?

W

Will Pittenger

I would like to set some key folders to have icons that identify what is
inside. So my Windows install folder would show a folder with the
Windows logo in front. (I have the ICO for that.) But how do you do
that? I found a folder that has such a specific icon, but I wasn't
successful getting it to work. My example used an icon inside an EXE.
My icon is a stand-alone ICO.

Right-click the folder > Properties > Customize > Change icon.
Browse to your icon , click on Apply, click on OK.
(You may have to press F5 to refresh the screen.)

Right-click the folder.
Select PROPERTIES
Select the CUSTOMIZE tab

Click CHANGE ICON
Navigate to the dll or ico file you want and select your icon.
Note: the standard Vista icons are in C:\WINDOWS\System32\imageres.dll

The customize tab is missing from certain system folders by design, such as Program Files, Windows etc.
If you create a new folder on your Desktop or in Documents does it have the customize tab ?

I just checked a variety of non-system folders. None have the tab. I
know I have seen it, but none have it.

So have you created a folder on your Desktop and checked for the tab?

Your URLs don't appear to be valid. I ended up at OpenDNS.

Oh well, if the information on that link I gave does not help then I'm out of ideas. Sorry.

All 3 links worked fine here.

Give it up.

I only bothered to click the first link but it worked fine.

I know what a link is. It's what turned up missing in your gene pool when
your mother tried doggie style with the neighborhood mutt.
Now, if you thought you were replying to the limey ass-wipe that's spoofing
me, I retract this statement. If not, you can give yourself an enema with a

Hello Will,

You had better add that as another problem you have as the links work for
me.

Well, I tried your links again. This time they worked. However, while I
was able to get the drive icons working, I can't get those tabs back.
Does someone have a way to cause Windows to search for and repair
missing COM tabs? I can't use the repair disk as my install CD
(actually a Dell disk) is SP1, but I have SP2 already.

It might be possible that you need to gain administrative access and
gain ownership control of your computer. If you've already done that,
than nevermind this post. Otherwise it's something to try. Do a search
in the tutorials section of the forums and you should find what you need
to do that.

Yes, all I found was how to use the customize folder UI. Given that tab
is missing, I need to know the registry changes it makes in the background.

Hello Will,

Have you tried the methods listed here yet? They may be able to help
