My guess is the functional equivalent of XP/Pro w/ 1 gb of memory is
Vista Business w/ 2 or 4 gb of memory.
WinXP was released five years ago and in the meantime, the hardware has
been improved beyond the amount of RAM installed.
What do the rest of you say?
That depends on your needs. My son, for instance, needed a fast machine
for his online games (ultimate frame rates required). So I ordered this
pretty expensive "XPS 710 Gamers Master" DELL machine, consisting of the
following main components:
- Windows Vista Ultimate
- Intel Core 2 Quad-Core QX6600 Processor
- 4GB Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
- nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX (768MB) DX10
- Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Music 7.1
- 500GB Serial ATA RAID 0
It took a couple of weeks while DELL was trying to get that system work
and eventually, DELL cancelled my order due to "compatibility problems".
WOW! I was just selecting from the components that they offered...
Next attempt - I ordered the Siemens-Fujitsu "Scaleo Xtreme" as is:
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- Intel Core 2 Quad-Core QX6600 Processor
- 4GB Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
- nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB) DX10
- Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1
- 1TB (2x500MB) Serial ATA II
When turning on the first time, this message appeared:
Windows Vista cannot be installed - HAL missing.
Press any key to continue... (loop)
Probably the similar problem causing DELL to give up finally.
Well, it took at least half an hour to get Vista installed. Since then,
my son is the luckiest man on earth with his unbeaten frame rates...
