Vista doesn't recongnize my DVD or CD

I own a HP Pavillion Laptop powered by windows vista home premium. When I put
a movie DVD I am able to open them in my DVD players like VLC or Quick Play.
But the problem is when I try to explore the DVD disk from My Computer, it
says "Write a Plain Disk" but the disk is not plain.. I can videos through
that..

The same happens to almost all the CDs I use. I tried with yet another CD,
which is a live CD. Windows Vista can't explore them but when I restart my
computer the CD got recognized and started to work as Live CD.

Pravin,

Have you tried setting to your liking the various CD/DVD options in Control
Panel? In the CD/DVD area of Control Panel, you can select the behavior you
want when you insert a CD or a DVD. Also, Windows Help and Support under
Start includes considerable information on how to use those settings and
features. Just search on some key words, like watch DVD, or open CD, or burn
CD, or whatever you want to know.

I have been researching the problem of some PCs not opening & reading
commercial DVD movie, but will open & read all other format of DVD/CD, for a
few months now, hoping to come up with a solution.
The problem has been around for a few years, unfortunately there is no
simple answer to the problem. It is not isolated to HP PCs or a particular
brand DVD drive
On the HP help site there is a 4 page instruction which will assist you to
isolate what the problem may be, and may fix it.

Does you DVD drive recognize all other types of DVD/CD?
Could you provide me with as much info as possible?

Same problem with same computer here. It must be due to one of the latest
vista patches I think, because I last used the drive on juin 19th. The drive
itself has no problems, because when I use the HP quickplay, the dvd or music
cd do play. Only vista keeps telling me to insert a disc when I try to browse
it. Also when i use the cmd prompt, the drive letter to which the dvd is
assigned, is invalid...
