Vista Build 5456

How can I get Vista Build 5456? Do you have to be a member of something? I
know of some people who already have it running.

Yeah, it costs time and effort. You have to beta test some of the less
glamorous apps, actually contribute bug reports, help support in the
newsgroups, and otherwise show that you deserve to be in a limited group of
dedicated beta testers.

Just to head off the snide remarks, NO, I am not a member of any of the
TechBetas. I am still stuck on CPP Beta 2 just like the rest of (most of)you
guys.

The TechBeta mostly includes developers, IT professionals, MVP's, and
experienced beta testers, some of whom have been beta testing for MS since
DOS.

Colin, half of the posters here lately don't remember cassette tapes and
you're talking about DOS...

Funny you should mention cassette tapes. I used to load and save programs
from a cassette recorder on my first PC. When I first turned on the PC the
"splash" screen just said
:)

I began with a Commodore 64 with a cassette drive and that was really slow. Then I purchased the 1541 disk drive and thought that was super fast compared to the cassette drive.

The software for the 1541 was adpated from the cassette software. It was faster but still very slow compared to Apple II drives.

I used to work in a computer store that sold 64's. One day a young guy came in and asked if we had a battery back up system for a 64 that could keep the system on for at least 24 hours. That one puzzled me so I asked why. It turns out he had stayed up all night programming and finally finished a program he wanted to send to a company on the west coast. The problem was he had forgotten to plug in the 1541 before powering up and had no way to save the program. He wanted to send the whole computer to the west coast running!

Zapper, a lowly Windows Feedback Panel member beta 2 tester asks:
What's a CPP?

Zapper

CPP is what Microsoft is calling the 2+ million people who signed up for and
received the Beta 2.

LOL!!!

One of the most amazing histories I've heard about computers. Thanks for remember me those old C-64 days.

They were great days. Another time a lady came in complaining about a program I sold her for her 64. She said she couldn't get it in the drive. I asked to see the disk so she pulled it out of her purse. She handed me just the media (no paper cover) flopping around like a wet noodle. She added the comment that "that darned package was the hardest thing to open she ever saw."

Yeah I remember I didn't even own a computer, but the store across the street
had a commodore 64 or vic 20. I spent two hours entering the program manually
just to have the game start working 5 minutes before the store closed. It was
my first encounter with a computer as a programmer...Unfortunately my dad
hated the things and never bought me one as a kid. The first computer that I
ever owned was a laptop Compaq 2199..and it turned out to be flawed...I
remember as a kid playing sammy lightfoot on my a commodor at my neighbours
up the road..all right vic20!!those were the days of computing..
