Vista Blue Screen Crash while accessing the properties of a file

Kevin Baykr

I have a Windows Vista SP1 and while i am accessing the Details tab in the
properties of a file i get a blue screen crash, but this doesn't always
happen. It only happens after i was in the Previous Versions tab and I'm
Going back to the Details tab.
Specs include, 1.5 G RAM, 1.66GHz core duo and Kaspersky Internet Security
2009 anti-virus..
Am I the only one who is having this problem?!

All files.. The last time it happened was for a music file of .mp3 format.
the blue screen is a system dump but it only appears for half a second then
the system reboots.

Hi,

With multimedia files, the problem often lies in codecs used for playback.
If you've installed any prior to this problem starting, they are likely
suspect. It's possible as well that existing ones have become corrupted.

The details of the crash will likely be found in the Event Viewer. Also, if
a minidump is being created we can analyze it for additional clues.

I will proudly say that i had to crash my PC again to find out what's going
on. i tried it on a .txt file this time. But it turns out it's not the
Details tab that's causing the problem it's the Previous Versions, as soon as
i click it the Blue Screen appears for half a second and the system is
rebooted. And i check the event viewer it says a mini dump was not
initialized neither for previous crashes nor this one.

Hi Kevin,

Ok, first stop the vss service, disable it and reboot. Then restart it. This
can be done from the services.msc snap-in. See if this resolves the issue of
the crashes.

As is turns out the vss service never really starts on my PC, it's a manual
start. I had to reboot because of an update so after i rebooted i started the
service and tried to access the Previous Versions tab, again Blue Screen
Crash.. In the event viewer the crash dump initialization again fail and on
start-up a driver always fails to load it's called ASPI32, don't know if this
will help in any way..

Hi Kevin,

Hard to tell if they are related, aspi32.sys is an adaptec file used as a
storage cable controller driver. It's certainly conceivable that it is. You
might check for updated drivers for the motherboard.

I've searched all over my PC and i can't the aspi32.sys file.. Can that be
the problem? I also tried updating my Drivers, all of them are up-to-date!

Hi,

It could be a problem if the system is looking for it and it isn't there. It
would have to be under C:\Windows\system32 or C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
Installing updated motherboard drivers would replace it if it was a
necessary file. You might also try running sfc /scannow from an elevated
command prompt. This routine would detect and replace any corrupted or
missing system files.

Still no use.. I ran the sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt it said
it recovered some files, although the aspi32.sys file is still not found, and
then tried going to Previous Versions again, Blue Screen crash.. Could this
be from a virus of some kind?!

Hi Kevin,

It doesn't sound like a virus, at least none that I'm aware of. It can't
hurt to run full scans from safe mode.

Try this as well: Go into the Control Panel/System applet and click on
system protection, then disable System Restore. Reboot and locate the System
Volume Information folder and delete it (you may need to take ownership or
change permissions for this to happen). Afterwards, restart System Restore
and reboot the machine once more. This should clear any problem files or
indexes that vss relies on that are potentially causing the crashes.

Still crashes.. But I found out a few things. First of it only crashes while
in trying to access the Previous Version of a file type, if it's a folder it
does not crash. My System Volume Information Folder says that there is 0
Bytes in it and when I tried deleting it the whole file didn't actually go
away is that normal?! And in Safe Mode it does not crash..
I'm actually starting to enjoy watching my PC crashing.. It's exciting.. :p

Hi,

The folder didn't go away because you don't have sufficient privileges. Take
ownership of it and completely remove it from the system before restarting
system restore.

In safe mode it doesn't crash? Interesting, as that means the function works
correctly, but something that is loading in normal runtime is interfering.

Well I'm The PC Administrator that gives me rights to do everything, doesn't
it?! If not how can i get the rest of my privileges

K

Can you please them me how i can do that?! I tried all i could think of.. but
still i couldn't fully delete System Volume Information.

R

Rick Rogers

Hi,

With system restore disabled, right click the folder and choose properties.
On the Security tab click advanced. Go to the owner tab and click edit.
Change it to your account, then apply/ok your way out. You should then be
able to actually delete the folder.

Well I was the owner of the file, being the administration and i still am..
But still i cannot fully delete the System Volume Information file. Is there
any other way?! But the odd thing is that the file is showing that it is
empty and i cannot access the file, it says access denied. It also says that
for the "$Recycle.Bin" file.
