New computer w/Vista: Blue screen

I purchased a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion Desktop with Intel® Core™2 Duo
Processor E6320 last week. Naturally it came with Vista. (The system is
just different enough to cause me headaches.) Problem: Starting today while
streaming music to Windows Media Player 11, the computer crashed and the blue
screen made its appearance. I rebooted started the stream again, again the
blue screen. It happened two more times streaming from a different site.
Immediately prior to the crash, the stream "stutters" and then there is a
piercing noise signaling it is about to go. I listened to streamed music on
Saturday and didn't have a problem. Could it be Vista, MS Media Player or
the computer? I listened to this site on my XP system for 2 years and had no
problems.

I'd suspect either some software that has been installed or a driver issue.
Have you sent the crash report off using 'Problem Reports and Solutions' in
Control Panel -> System to see if they've got the crash on record and have a
solution yet?

No I have not. I am still stumbling around the interface Vista and did not
locate the "problem report & solutions". I will check tonight and see what
is there. I have not loaded any software since Friday and like I said
everything was fine (at least with Media Player) through Sunday. Yesterday
it simply wouldn't cooperate.

It has crashed 9 times now. Each time when streaming audio. This is not
good. All instances have been reported through the 'Problem Reports &
Solutions" and there are no solutions as of 8 PM today.

Will I ever get to listen to NPR on the web again?

Have you checked the soundcard manufacturer's website to make sure you have
the latest drivers Vista compatible drivers for your soundcard. Also, check
to see if the available drivers are are full featured or only support basic
functions as that might have an effect as well. If that is the case, you
will need to contact the soundcard manufacturer or wait for them to provide
full featured drivers.

Sounds like a sound/graphics card driver issue to me. Try downloading
the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

I agree - the piercing noise is the sound card stuck in a very short sound
loop.
