Vista and Windows defender

I installed the Vista SP1 recently (windows home premium) and since then,
every single time I have an update from Windows Defender (automatic update,
successful), I have a problem starting my computer the following session. It
doesn't seem to boot and I have to restart it, which solve the problem most
of the time. However, this is annoying and Defender never asked me to restart
the computer to validate the update.
Does anyone have also this issue and a way to solve it ?

Wait longer. Defender is re-scanning everything.
