Windows Defender & Vista

Dave

New HP computer with Vista Home Premium & Windows Defender pre-installed.
Have my Defender set to scan daily at 8AM but even after manually scanning I
get the yellow exclamation mark that I have not scanned since 1/10!! Never
had this problem with XP on my old Gateway! Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Dave

I too used to get this a lot but then it miraculously disappeared - well I
can't recall doing anything to eradicate the problem, anyway. Is Windows
Update set to automatically download update and ask permission if you want
to install them or not, or is it set to download at a set time of day? It
maybe that you are not receiving updated definitions for defender. Go to
Start and click All Programs and then click Windows Update. In the Windows
Update window you will see (in the right hand frame under the button marked
'check for updates' a section marked 'updates were installed.' This will
tell you the last time any updates were installed. Now click on the blue
link marked 'view update history' Check to see that you have the following
defender updates:

KB915597 (Definition 1.24.5547.0) installed 17/01/2008
KB915597 (Definition 1.24.5547.0) installed 16/01/2008
KB915597 (Definition 1.24.5399.0) installed 13/01/2008

If you have these updates installed then you are fully up to date with
definitions. If not then click the Check for Updates button.

If the definitions are there then I suggest you open Windows Defender and do
a 'Full' scan rather than a 'quick' scan.

John, an update, all 3 are showing when you click on view updates in Windows
update but only Windows updates are showing on the Installed Updates page!!

Are the 3 updates shown in the box at the top of the update window? Does the
button actually say 'check for updates' or 'install'. If they are not in the
'view update history' windows then they haven't yet been installed. If there
is an 'install' button on the windows update page, then click Install to
install them.

The 3 updates are shown on the Update History but not installed...no Defender
updates are shown on installed but many including today are shown on
history!!
The 1.24.5611.o was successful today 1/18. I have no idea why the difference
in history and installed. All show successful!
