Vista and Internet explorer

I have just received my new Inspiron 531 with Vista (I couldn't persuade Dell
to sell me one with XP).
I have set it up and initially all was well. Now I have installed all my
programs, I find that I cannot open Internet explorer by double right
clicking the desktop icon.
What happens if I do that is either:
C++ runtime error message or
It says not responding and 100% but does not display the page.
The way I have found around this is to right click the desktop icon and left
click 'run as administrator'. This opens up google straight away.
I thought initially this may be because my user profile was not set as
administrator, but I have reset me as administrator now.
Then I read in Personal Computer World that Vista comes with Administrator
level access disabled. I followed their instructions as to how to reset it
but became lost (I think they were using a different version of Vista to
reset user properties).
Then I rang Dell Helpline who said we are now closed! Apparently when users
get home from work and in front of their PC (6pm) they have closed and gone
home and only the expensive technical phone line for business users helpline
works!
They are getting me a call back from someone at home tonight from the free
phone line if I am home by 530pm.
They are going along the lines of assuming that McAfee has restricted access
to internet explorer.
Last night they talked me through resetting some of internet explorer
settings, and had me close down McAfee Security while I made adjustments to
Internet explorer.
This didn't work at all, so I put McAfee back on until a solution arrives.
This is a niggling problem, and hopefully not a serious one. I like the
product and am satisfied with the deal.
I cant believe that Dell have a business helpline open outside business
hours, and home users who must buy a lot of Dell PC's are left without help
in the evening when they use their PC's.
I can't tell Dell customer service I am satisfied (which they seem to be
concerned about, I am beginning to think they are paid for each person that
says the S word). I would be satisfied if the after sales helpline is as good
as the product appears to be.
Does anyone know how to open internet explorer without pretending to be
another administrator?

I've never seen it where a double right click was used to open IE.

It's always been a single left click and still is on "my" Vista machine.

Internet Explorer should not be run as an administrator.

The reason it works sounds like there is something installed on your profile
which is breaking IE7. So I'd recommend going to Start -> typing Internet
Explorer -> clicking No add on version, see if that opens.

Sorry Steve you are correct double left doesnt work. Single right click and
left click on 'run as administrator' works.

I am happy it works, even if its the wrong way to get into it. As its a new
PC I have just loaded all my software on to it. Is the only way to get it
going properly to reset to manufacturer settings?
It worked fine initially before, then when I loaded software on to it, it
only allows me to access internet explorer via this method.
Is there anything to be said for Dells view that McAfee has restricted the
access? I seem to have a user profile of administrator, although I dont know
if administrator functions have been disabled or not 'activated'

OK two options, as it does seem to be something you've installed.

1) Start Internet Explorer (No add ons).

This is in Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools. Or search
for it using Start Search.

If that opens fine, go to Tools -> Manage add ons -> Enable or disable add
ons. Go through and disable any that relate to something you've recently
installed.

OR.

Use System Restore to go back prior to when you installed the software which
broke IE7. This will leave your settings and the like intact just remove
changes to the system.

You want to leave it how it was setup by Dell. On Windows Vista programs
run as standard user even on an administrators desktop. This is for
security reasons and is normal.

Hi Paul, I read your two options and Im sure that Dell technical talked me
through the first one last night. I couldn't see any program called Internet
explorer 'no add ons' listed.
They therefore took me into disabling McAfee and disabling add ons in
internet explorer.
When this didn't work, I put back McAfee to make the PC secure.
This leaves me with option 2.
Am I going to lose every CD/software I have loaded if I do this?
