I have Vista Ultimate installed and then installed Kubuntu as a dual boot
setup...all went sweet and I followed the instructions from a Linux dual
boot site and I would deffo recommend Kubuntu as a dual boot with Vista, I
am a total novice with Linux so I'm having a play about with it, it is
extremely fast, I used the adept manager and ran the upgrade tool and it
went and upgraded to a new version of Kubuntu 7.04 fiesty...very impressive
plus I found all the latest drivers for my setup without any hassle at all.

I have Xp and Ubuntu in a dual boot on my HP dv9030us laptop. The Ubuntu
install was easy, but I still needed some guidance from the forum helpers.
I did the Ubuntu install only because I saw in the Ubuntu forums that others
had installed Linux on this laptop and were successful. I'm fairly happy
with how my HP laptop is running Linux.

I do highly recommend looking before leaping. I have Vista and Ubuntu on an
older Gateway laptop that I keep around for experimentation. And while
Ubuntu - and Vista too by the way - installed with no problems, there are
hardware elements that aren't jiving with Linux. Linux can't deal with the
wireless card on the Gateway and I've tried several programs.

It's still a shot in the dark in many cases when you install Linux - some
hardware may be difficult to configure or impossible because no drivers
exist for it. Or the only driver that does exist is made by a man in Germany
and You have to configure and install the driver on your own with no manual
to guide you. (That comes from a real life Linux story I heard.)

I say this from my own recent experience getting help on the Ubuntu forums -
there are just as many people pulling out their hair over difficult problems
on the Linux forums as there are here. (Surprise !!)

It's all a matter of which set of traumas you want. ....Frank

Hi Rich, yes it was straight forward and hassle free and as I said I did
get all the latest drivers without any probs at all, I've always used
Windows and after seeing a friends machine that also has the dual boot with
Kubuntu I thought it looked an ran brilliantly so I installed it on mine.

Please share the joy! I have an HP Pavilion that came with Vista Home
Premium. Can I install Ubuntu/Kubuntu in a dual boot? I have done it
with XP on a tabletop machine. Are there special problems installing on
a laptop?

Thanks in advance,

Avraham

Yes, you can. Here's the first step, do NOT skip this, burn the
recovery CDs that HP allows you to make if they don't come with the
system, this will allow you to put everything back as it was if need be
or if you sell the computer.

Next, obtain some aftermarket software that will allow you to partition
your harddrive. I like Partition Commander, others like Partition
Magic and there are more available. Some, I think, are freeware,
Google will find them all for you.

Now you can install Linux or whatever you want as a second OS on one of
the other partitions you've created. Do not install a second OS on the
C: partition, that's where your Vista install is located.

If you need more detailed instructions just ask.

The differences, though, are eye opening:

1. Ubuntu's free. Retail Vista costs a kidney and half a lung.

2. Ubuntu can be freely copied, shared and installed on as many
computers as you like. Vista, it's one high priced OS per computer.

3. Ubuntu is very resistant to malware. Vista is not.

4. Ubuntu will run on old computers. Vista will not.

5. Ubuntu gives updates not only for the OS but *everything* on the
computer. Vista will only update itself. You have to know that updates
are available and know where to find them, i.e., Java, Flash, Adobe
Reader, all your anti malware apps, etc.

6. Ubuntu doesn't need to be activated nor do you need to prove that
it's "genuine". Vista requires initial activation and subsequent passing
of the WGA test if you want to use Windows Updates or download anything
from MS. If you change hardware with Vista, expect to call India.

Why, when the Ubuntu installation will automatically shrink an existing NTFS
partition and free up room for the Ubuntu system? Letting the Ubuntu
installer do this is recommended over doing it before hand as you suggest.

Then don't use "Urbuttoo", use Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS or whatever your
little heart desires. Hasta la Vista.

Did you know that "Vista" means "Sight" in English? Maybe that explains
why Vista hurts the eyes.
