I recommend installing it, as it contains newer code, more stable, and some
other enhancements.

If you are just "Windows shopping" and not here to help MS get Vista ready
for primetime, then there is no need for you to download 5728. If, however,
you are using Vista as intended at this point to make Vista better for all
who will buy it after release then by all means load up 5728 and keep
sending those bug reports.

I upgraded from 5600 to 5728. The upgrade portion went okay, but I cannot
get the Display Settings to work with my external monitor. No problem with
5600. 5728 is a little faster, but not worth having to use the Hardware
function combo on my XPS Gen2 laptop to see the external monitor. Switched
back to 5600 until Ms gets this working properly.

From RC1, start Windows Setup. Click Clean Install, then select your C Drive, it will then say your old windows install will be moved to the Windows.Old folder, click OK, and then the install should progress and you will have a clean install on the C drive of 5728.

Although, because of the way that you have your applications installed on another drive I am going to suggest you do an upgrade. It is going to take longer, but everything will be migrated.
NOTE: You will have to reinstall any programs, etc.

Hi Colin,

There is this warning on the page where you download Vista Build 5728:

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Vista.

This page includes information to help you download a special test build of
Windows Vista. This build (5728) has a number of improvements and updates
from RC1, but has not been put through the same internal testing process as
RC1 and therefore may be unstable in certain installations. We are making
this release available for a limited time only (and only by download) in
order to get broad distribution and testing in a variety of PC
configurations. Please note: This build may not have the same level of
support or servicing via Windows Update, and you may not be able to upgrade
to the final version of Windows Vista. To continue, please use the links
below to start the download. Otherwise, please click here to access the
download for Windows Vista RC1 (build 5600).

Installation notice: Users of Toshiba models M400, M4, and M5 should choose
to do a clean install (not upgrade) of this build."

The warning are even more explicit about who should not use Vista. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

Note: This is beta code and should not be used in a production environment
or on a primary computer in the home. RC1 is intended for developers, IT
professionals, and technology experts to continue or begin their testing of
Windows Vista. Before you decide to use RC1, you should feel comfortable
with installing operating systems, updating drivers, and general PC
troubleshooting. Some risks of using beta operating systems include hardware
and software incompatibility and system instability. If you have concerns
about installing this beta software on your computer, we encourage you to
obtain the final release version of Windows Vista when it is available in
2007.

Well my attitude for the past 20+ years is that any 1) operating system is
flaky, beta or release, or patched, or service packed... 2) computer
hardware dies unexpectedly as well. 3)power surges, static electricity,
cosmic radiation can all cause problems too.

So I have been very happy to use Vista on my production machine, I have data
backups and know that if the OS or the computer dies I can continue on with
my life :D

HOWEVER for those who are not confident with their ability to recover from a
'disaster' I agree totally that they should NOT install Windows vista on
anything but a non-essential computer system, caveat emptor!

Meanwhile I remain well pleased with Vista 5728.
