viruses

I"ve been having a lot of problems lately. I believe it's
due to a couple of viruses I had but got rid of. I
upgraded to WinXP from WinME. Upgraded to norton antivirus
2003. After about 1 month, something shut the antivirus
off. I could still download antivirus definitions but not
client server and foundations. My disk drive would be
recognised when a cd was put in but wouldn't automatically
load. I had to do it manually. Now it won't even load
manually. My automatic update from microsoft is unchecked
and can't be checked to allow updates. System restore does
not restore to an earlier date either.
I realise some files have probably been lost. Would
uninstalling WinXP and reinstalling it help me fix these
problems? If so, how and where do I go to uninstall?

Sounds like you might have been hacked to me. Do you have any unauthorized
user accounts on the machine or is your guest account by chance enabled?
How is this machine connected to the internet? Is the connection
firewalled?
