Virus problem, I think

J

Jack Bruss

My daughters computer recently became unable to access our home network and
the internet, and I think maybe it's because of a virus. I subscribe to
McAfee, but I can't download a setup file and try it on her computer - the
only option I can seem to find is to install the program from the internet.
But since my daughters computer can't see the internet, I can't do that.

I tried downloading a free anti-virus program called AVG, putting it on a
cd, and running it on my daughters computer, but it won't load because
"shell.dll is missing".

Is there some way to either run McAfee on this computer or find a free
version of something else I can put on a CD and try?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

Google is your friend .. this was discussed here less than three weeks
ago. First thing to try is to see whether her 'hosts' file has been
messed up by a virus / worm / trojan etc. There are a long list of
things you can try after that, none of which have changed in the last
three weeks.

If you're referring to the post I started that now has 73 messages, I've
already run Spybot and Adaware and that has fixed all the problems we had
except for the fact that we can't access our home network or internet with
my daughters computer. I just downloaded a standalone antivirus file called
stinger.exe from McAfee at someones suggestion, so I'll try that shortly.

copy shell.dll to a floppy then to her windows folder?

then repeat with whatever other dll's are missing? (copy from same os as
hers to hers)

dunno about free virus scanners, wait for (e-mail address removed) to speak

See my post yesterday concerning antidote, and my web site for the
sys-up download.

You've probably removed the virus by now then, just some damage left
behind. if all else fails, and you don't have an old enough (working)
system restore point, then just do a 'repair install', assuming you have
a real WinXP installation disk (assuming it's winXP).

The Stinger.exe from McAfee didn't find anything. I guess we'll try a
system restore, and if that fails, we'll do a reinstall, I guess, or a
"repair install", although I don't know what that is. Is that a menu option
on the XP cd?

What's a "repair install". It doesn't seem to be an option on the Win XP
cd.

Google is still your friend. 8>.

A repair install starts out like a normal install, until (just after
entering your key-code, iirc) XP notices you already have a system
installed on the disk and asks if you want to repair that one, or
install a new one. Take the 'repair' option.
