Virus - French Hacker

My computer as been hit by a virus - The French Hacker, can anyone tell me if
there is a cure for this. I can not re-boot my computer.

TIME computers did NOT supply me with a OS CD for the XP that is loaded onto
my computer, they only supply (£39) a re-load disc, which returns the
computer back to factory settings, deleting ALL programmes and files. Why
don't they supply the FULL OS CD??

None of the programmes would work with this virus and now after shutting
down, I can not re-boot the computer. PLEASE help.

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

microsoft.public.scripting.virus.discussion
microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus

What Anti Virus declared this supposed virus "French Hacker" ?

How do you know you have a virus ?

They don't supply the full OS because it would cost them too much, and they
would have to pass the cost to you..

Mike:

They should NOT be allowed to sell it under those circumstances then !

I believe I have a virus, because I cannot open any programs, and after shut
the computer down, it will NOT re-boot. When this all started, everytime i
tried to open a programme, a pop-up appeared, bearing the name 'The French
Hacker' and using swearing words. Does this qualify it as a virus or will it
have some other name. I know what I would call it!

Microsoft supply OEM on the basis that the vendor will support the product
properly.. surely, the vendor is at fault?..

No. That qualifies as a faux conclusion based on incomplete information.

I looked in Virus Libraries and found no virus with the search string "French Hacker".

True viruses WANT your computer to work so theu can do their main objective - spread.
The definition of a virus is that it self replicates.

You may have non viral malware, you may have a virus worm or Trojan. However, that can not
be determined if the computer can't boot. The objective would have to determine why it
won't boot. You have supplied zero information to go on.

Did it boot and fail in a BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) ?

Did it just never load ?

Was an error message displayed and if "yes" then what EXACTLY was the error message ?

Can you boot into Safe Mode ?
Yada, yada, etc, etc...

You need to supply facts all the facts possible.
Everthing that was written in the second post SHOULD have been in the first post.

I think so Mike. I think if you buy a PC with an OS, then the purchaser has the full right
to have and own the complete set of installations files for that OS. The owner should be
able to wipe the PC clean and reinstall the OS at will. I think that is a consumer's right,
not a privilege.

... and there lies the problem.. some vendors do little or nothing.. my own
view is that the vendor should supply an OEM CD plus whatever
software/driver package is first included in the sale.. I don't think that
they will listen to little old me though..

It makes it awkward for us to recommend anything other than to go back to
the vendor or buy a new copy.. not a good situation at all..
