Virus disabled ability to install Defender on XP

My wife's computer was loaded with viruses and malware. I think I cleaned
them out except now I cannot install Windows Defender. It installs 80% and
then stalls when "Starting Services" portion of the install comes up. I then
get a pop-up saying:

"Service 'Windows Defender' (WinDefend) failed to start. Verify that you
have sufficient privleges to start system services".

I am using Windows XP Home edition with all updates and service pack 3.

The viruses also screwed up the ability to start task manager. I am sure it
changed a registry key, but I have no clue which one.

Can anyone help? Thank you

Search for, and download a program named "HijackThis" to detect and fix
issues such as this.

It's not hard to remove this annoyance from your machine, and there is lots
of information available on the web.

Good luck
