virus checker no longer able to connect

After installing all the recent critical updates my virus
checker (AVG) can no longer make a connection to the
internet to get the virus updates. Any suggestions?

Joe, see my note. I first recognized my problem when my
virus checker (Panda) would not update. I had to remove
Service Pack 4 in order to regain access.
