virus - bad update?

I have a virus or I have received defective updates from
Microsoft. I am using Norton Antivirus 2003 with auto
update and Windows XP with auto update enabled.

After the last update (less than 1 week ago) from MS the
computer at random times but usually when I first start it
will freeze or reboot and freeze in the reboot. If I turn
the power off then on the computer is able to boot
normally.

I had recently tried to update Ulead Video Studio and was
unable to because the computer claimed that the file was
not a Win 32 application.

With this current worm warning I downloaded the patch from
MS and when I go to run it I get the same error message
that the file is not a Win 32 application.

I have run complete computer checks with Norton Anti virus
after manually updating it twice no viruses are detected.

So I have to conclude that either I have an as yet to be
identified virus or MS has given me a faulty update which
has caused serious problems. Most likely is that I have a
virus. Any ideas?
