Virus attacked internet explorer Outlook

I had notebook pre-instaled windows xp home edition. in saturday, 14
February 2004 I can dial-up to my ISP but since I can browsed with Internet
explorer that appeared message "The Page can't be display". I will try to
run Microsoft Outlook, it had problem "Can't find server pop3 server".

I examine all setting in internet explorer and microsoft Outlook, both is no
problem. I think that are something wrong and I formatted Hard drive and
re-instaled all system. I surprised because It's resolving problem then I
brought notebook to store. Technisian told to me that note book BIOS was
attacked by virus.

Anybody can help me? how to remove virus in BIOS? and what kinds was virus
behaviour like this ?

Hi,

Pardon my French but the BIOS being attacked by a virus
is a load of bullsh1t !! The problem will be a lot
simpler than that.

Here are a few things to try:

1) Open a DOS box (type CMD in Run box and hit Return)
type IPCONFIG /ALL and hit Return

Make sure that the I.P address is a valid one (i.e. not
192.168.x.x or 168.254.x.x).

Type IPCONFIG /RELEASE
Type IPCONFIG /RENEW

You should not see any error messages (you are asking you
ISP to give you a I.P address). If you see error messages
contact your ISP.

2) Run a FULL virus scan of your system

3) Open a DOS box (type CMD in Run box and hit Return)
Type: ping www.microsoft.com

You should get a reply similar to this:

Pinging www2.microsoft.akadns.net [207.46.245.156] with
32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

The important bit to watch out for is that you see a
valid I.P address (like the one above) get resolved. If
you don't there may be a problem with your DNS (speak to
ISP).

4) Look for a file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open it with notepad and make sure there are no weird
entries in there for the websites you are trying to visit

(e-mail address removed)

Hope this helps somewhat,
