Does anyone know if Virtual PC 2004 is compatible, and works with Windows

It works on XP to run a Vista virtual machine. It is difficult to install
on a Vista host, however. If you're thinking of recovering to XP by running
XP in virtual machine on Vista, I don't think I would rely on it very much.
Reminder, it only works on x86 Windows, not x64. x64 host support will not
come until VPC 2007, which was announced in a round about way today.

Thanks, but I would use it more for printing and do you think it lets you
burn DVDs with Nero?

It definitely does not support burning. The emulated cd drive is read only.
The same for the emulated cd/dvd drive in Virtual Server. Sorry.

Colin, is there a program for Windows Vista that lets you have XP as a

How could it ever support burning anyway? It uses an emulated drive.
You can create image files with software in the vm and then transfer the
image file to the host and use the host's drive to burn it, though.

Nero works in VMWare. I've used it with a 98SE Guest in an XP Home Host. It
doesn't play DVD's, but burning works fine.
Of course, the Cd drive is NOT virtualized. The 98SE Guest accesses the
real cd drive.

on the VMWare website. Some folks there are using VMWare Workstation on
Vista. Of course, unlike Microsoft VirtualPC, VMWare is not free. But I
think there's a trial available. Not sure as I haven't checked it out in a
while.

Virtual PC uses the physical optical and floppy drives by capturing them.
Not different in that respect. But burning software tries to use the
virtual cd drive anyway and that does not work. VMWare does have a trial.

They still have a 30day trial version available for the latest VMWare
Workstation. There is also a free VMWare Player for 'ready-made' virtual pc
guests.
