Virtual PC 2004 - virtual dynamic disk does not grow

Hi,

have Virtual PC installed on my Windows XP SP2 machine and the guest OS I
am using is w2k3. I am trying to install the VS2005 beta and I am getting
the error

Out of disk space -- Volume: "C:\"; required space: 1,997,844 KB; available
space: 1,318,724 KB. Free some disk space and retry.

If I have a dynamic disk that is supposed to grow up to 16gig and I have
used some 3.61gig of the 4.87gig (according to the Properties on my C: drive
on the Guest machine) why can't it grow to accomodate this 1.9gig install. My
host computer has 11.1gig free.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Bill

From the data you have given, it is clear that your dynamic virtual disk is
*not* capable of expanding to 16GB. The data from Windows clearly shows
that the maximum size your dynamic disk will expand to is 4.87 GB. That
presumably is the size it was created as. Dynamic disks cannot grow larger
than the size they were created as.

Hi Robin,

Thanks much for the quick reply. Interesting that when I set up the dynamic
disk, it showed 16787kb (or something close :). It was the default setting
that is used to create the disk. Should the properties of the C:/ drive on
the Guest OS show 16gig? Perhaps I did do something incorrect (wouldn't be
the first mistake I've made).

So - would you recommend removing the Guest completely and reinstalling and
make sure that the disk is set up for 16gig?

thanks!
Bill

A possibility is that when the virtual hard disk was partitioned and
formatted, only a 4.87 GB partition was created.

In the virtual PC, try right-clicking "My Computer", select "Manage", select
"Storage", "Disk Management", and have a look at the size of partition(s)
shown, and see what's happening.

On re-reading your original post, I see that you are trying to install
Virtual Server 2005 on Win2K3, itself a guest inside Virtual PC 2004. This
will not work: you cannot run an emulator inside an emulator.
