Virtual Memory

Dave

As of today, whenever I open Internet explorer, it doesn't take five minutes
and I get a message that says "your system is getting low on virtual memory"
shortly thereafter, I get an error message that says "Internet explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close blah blah blah".
I checked my system virtual memory config. and its set to defaults. I ran on
line virus scans, as well as my own Norton antivirus 2004 and no viruses
were found. I run spybot s and d, and pest patrol.
Why has this happened just as of today. Any idea's?
Thanks for your expert assistance

But you didn't tell us how much RAM you have and what the virtual memory
settings are set to.

Hi Dave,

Are you running any of Norton's other utilities? If so try turning them off
and just use the AV software. Otherwise, do you have Intel Application
Accelerator installed? If so, you need to uninstall it and install the
latest version. The older ones are incompatible with WinXP and can cause
this error message.

If not, then try this: Go to System properties/advanced/performance
settings/advanced tab/virtual memory change and disable the swap file.
Reboot. Delete all instances of pagefile.sys from all drives should any
exist, then reverse the original steps and reenable the swap file. Reboot
once more to finish. See if this helps,

please give some pertinent information.....not just jibberish....how much
actually memory do you have...just what is this 'default" level of virtual
memory.....
you have not done your homework...do some scans here in the
newsgroups...READ about virtual memory.....OK...it'll really help you in the
long run....

OK sure.
I have 256 mb of RAM installed.
The default setting I refer to is the system managed
option. That is set to 2mb minimum with 334 mb recommended and 335mb
currently allocated.
I only have norton internet security 2004 which also
contains the antivirus software, and both are current
and updated automatically.
In the task manager window, the commit charge would read on a typical
session with my minimum services
running and only two programs open (IE and OE)
as roughly 174mb total, and the limit being roughly 560xxx and peak about
at 194mb. Soon after I opened
my system, the peak would approach the limit and my system would freeze and
IE
would shut down.
Another interesting note, and I have no idea if it's related, is that I
cannot utilize this forum
on the web. I can open the forum and read, but if I try to post using the
web reader,
I get a message that says the "service" is temporarily out of service and to
please try
again later.
Another interesting note that I would think I wouldnt have to include is the
fact that since
my system freezes and IE shuts down soon after I open it, that it doesnt
allow for much time to
scan and read the newsgroups doing research, but thanks for the tip (DUH).
