Virtual memory minimum too low

When I am viewing I Player I often get an interruption and a message
"Virtual Memory Minimum too low"
Can I change this? and if so how?

Which is approx 1.5 and 3 times the RAM size as recommended

Do you have plenty of free disk space? You can set a larger maximum
pagefile but it is normally better to add RAM. Accessing RAM is quicker
than accessing the pagefile.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

there

In the Control Panel, click "System"
In the System Properties panel, click "Advanced"
Then, click "Settings"
Next, click "Advanced"
Finally, click "Virtual Memory"
On that final panel, select the button "System managed size"

This option is buried quite deeply.

Add more RAM. What is your computer make and model?

Changing to a system managed pagefile may eliminate the virtual memory
messages but will not help performance as you have insufficient RAM.

Unless you (or someone who set up your computer) knows more about
managing memory that XP, set the system up to "System managed size".

Reboot.

If you still see the messages regarding virtual memory they are not
errors, but instead informational messages telling you that XP is
doing it's job.

If you still have the message, THEN decide what to do and if anything
needs to be adjusted.

Some installed programs have optional components that consume a lot of
VM and you may not need them. Right now, it is anybody's guess.
Merely looking at things and guessing will not make the message go
away.

We can look at your system at determine with certainty where your VM
is going and what to do about it if needed.

Please provide additional information about your system.

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to
be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted
information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.

And is it practical?

Yes, but not necessarily worthwhile.

How much RAM you need for good performance is *not* a
one-size-fits-all situation. You get good performance if the amount of
RAM you have keeps you from using the page file significantly, and
that depends on what apps you run. Most people running a typical range
of business applications under XP find that somewhere around 512MB
works well, others need more. Almost anyone will see poor performance
with less than 256MB. Some people, particularly those doing things
like editing large photographic images, can see a performance boost by
adding even more than 512MB--sometimes much more.

If you are currently using the page file significantly, more memory
will decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your performance.
If you are not using the page file significantly, more memory will do
nothing for you. Go to
http://billsway.com/notes_public/winxp_tweaks/ and download
WinXP-2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your page file usage. That should
give you a good idea of whether more memory can help, and if so, how
much more.

paging file will not have changed. You may not need to add more RAM
to alleviate the message.

I have half the RAM you do! But we are not all going to be running
the same things...

You can fix your msinfo32 issue:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.

Under Services and Applications, click Services, and then stop the
Windows Management Instrumentation service. If asked about stopping
other services (Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)),
respond in the affirmative.

Delete all of the files and folder that are in the c:\Windows
\System32\Wbem\Repository folder (they will be recreated when you
reboot).

Immediately restart the computer to the Firewall will be restarted.

The Repository folder information is recreated when the computer
restarts.

Try msinfo32 now.
