Run a virus or malware check.

"Virtual memory" is Windows special name for a
swap file (on the hard drive) needed sometimes (but
not every day) to prevent your running out of RAM
(chip memory) space. Check its settings via
/ Control Panel / System / Performance / Virtual Memory

Default setting is "Let Windows manage it." Only if your
C: drive is 90 per cent full do you need to take special
steps (e.g. empty or reration Temporary Internet Files etc.)

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report from Pat's
computer. Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View
Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My
Documents Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk
Defragmenter as it is more informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

This message usually means that the pagefile is too small.
"system managed" size works best for most people.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP

What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

What exactly do you have by way of a Windows XP CD?

Bummer!!! It might be possible to change the size of the pagefile with a
tool like BartPE. However, you might be more comfortable taking it to a
good repair shop (not one of the big box retailers).
You might investigate how to create a BartPE disk. You can find lots of
information about the program by searching the internet for "BartPE".
Eventually, you wind up with a bootable CD that does not depend on whether
the hard drive is bootable or not. I haven't had to use this tool very much
and thus do not know much about it.

Boot into Safe Mode (designed for repairs.)
Default installation of BOOT.INI ought to put on screen
a menu (for 10 to 30 sec.) inviting you to choose between
regular WinXP boot and Safe Mode boot. If you do not
see this, reboot (via button) and hold down the CTRL key
until you see a menu of various boot options including
Safe Mode, then choose this.

You can then go to / Control Panel / System / Performance / Virtual Mem
and reset it to "Let Windows manage it." This should enable Windows
to boot regularly.

--Assuming the error message is genuine, that is:
1. You have no virus or malware and
2. No hardware fault has occurred (e.g. bad RAM chip.)

Usually a sign that the boot volume's (Windows' drive) letter was
changed. If your computer is networked or if you can mount the disk in
another Windows machine or boot the computer with a Bart's PE disk or an
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows with registry plugin you can check the
drive letter assignment and change it back if need be.

Unable to log on if the boot partition drive letter has changed
