Martha

Good evening,

This evening, I'm getting an error message on one of my
comoputers that states I'm out of Virtual Memory. I can
connect to the Internet, but can not access any pages.

Thanks,
Martha

Hi Martha,

What, exactly, is the result when you try to access a page with your
comptometer?

Good morning,
Along the bottom bar it says 'Page can not be found.' But
I also get an error message that states 'Out of Virtual
Memeory. Please see Help to increase size."
Thanks,
Martha

John,

I followed the instructions on the web page. The initial
size was already set to 384.
Any more suggestions.
Thanks so much for your time.

Martha

How much RAM have you got on your machine? And what is the Maximum
shown in your virtual memory settings? Try setting the maximum to 3
times RAM, see if it helps. Also, make sure that you have enough free
space on the pagefile drive.

John

John,

Let me say I'm not computer literate so if my answers are
not what you suggested, I'm sorry.
Here are the numbers I came up with.

Paging File 382-768
Space Available 36881 MB
261,552 KB Ram

I hope you're not laughing,

Martha

No, I'm not laughing, you reported just what I asked for. You can find
your way around just fine, you should be able to get through this. I
sort of knew before I asked what the answer would be, that's because by
default Windows sets the initial pagefile to 1.5 times RAM and maximum
to 3 times. But I wanted a confirmation from your part.

Unfortunately you gave me the hard answer, if the maximum had been set
at less than 768 I would have told you to change it. So now that idea
is down the drain. Now I have no solid idea as to what the problem is,
your pagefile appears to be properly configured for most average pc and
you have plenty of free space. There appears to be no physical damage
to the pagefile because you would have other problems if such was the
case. Maybe this is a browser issue? Internet Explorer bug? IE is an
application that I just don't bother with so I can't say, maybe an IE
pro can comment.

Other than that and while we wait for one of the resident experts to
offer further advice all I can think of is that you may have background
applications or services consuming the virtual memory. Can you check on
your running processes and report back? Use the Task Manager
(Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and look at the "Processes" tab, what is running? Can
you post the list so that we can examine things a bit more closely?
There might be malware or spyware involved here.

Also can you check on what Windows actually reports on the pagefile
usage? Click on "Start" Button>Programs>Administrative
Tools>Performance. You might want to maximize the resulting
"Performance" window to make it easier to navigate. On the right main
panel on the toolbar you will see a button with a "+" (Add (Ctrl-I)).
Click on +, an "Add Counter" screen will popup, in the "Performance
object" box select "Paging file". In the radio buttons under the
performance object select "All counters" & "All instances". Now click
on "Add" at the upper right and close the "Add counters" windows. Now
click on the Notepad icon (View Report (Ctrl-R)) next to the "+". You
will now see 2 lines that read "% Usage" & "% Peak". Can you post the
values here?

In the meantime maybe someone else has an easy fix for what may end up
to be a minor bug.

John

Again, Thanks John,

One more thing I didn't mention was that we just had a new
hard drive put in the machine. This would have nothing to
do with the problem would it? If so, then I DO apologize
for withholding that little bit of info.

How many hard drives in the machine? You mean it's a new HD and you
installed Windows 2000 on it? It shouldn't matter, the pagefile seems
to be properly configured. Just out of curiosity how many
partitions/drives on your pc? More than 1? Check your folder options
and enable the "View Hidden and System files". Do a search on the whole
pc for pagefile.sys. How many returns? Does the error only happen when
you try to use your browser? Is the browser Internet Explorer? You
might have a BHO or some kind of spyware causing this, or way too many
apps running in the background. Post a list of the running processes,
and do that search for pagefile.sys. Post back with more details.

John

Task Manager will show you memory usage, but you may have
to customize it a little. Look through the list and see
who the culprits are. One particular memory hog that I
frequently find is Acrobat Reader - it doesn't get deleted
when done. Another set of bad ones are stupid files that
my ISP loads.
