Virtual Memory Error ... No Paging File

J

JCO

OS = W2K w/sp4

During boot, I get a Virtual Memory Error stating that my computer has no
Paging File. It then explains how to set the Virtual Memory which is easy.
The problem is that it won't boot up. After I click okay on the error
dialog, the message comes back up again (in 5-10 seconds). Since this keeps
repeating, I can't full boot up to make the changes.

What do I do.

History: I had a HD Crash/Error. I restored from an image to another HD.
Now I get the error.

Thanks in advance

Hi JCO,

I do understand you post here for widerly suggestions. However I think I
must stated that Microsoft does not support the installation with Ghost
since we do not learn more about the technology of Symantec Ghost of
Windows XP. We recommend using sysprep tool to perform a clone installation
and let us know if the same issue would appear. I would like to provide you
with the following information for your reference:

You can get the Sysprep 2.0 tool (for Windows XP) from the Windows setup CD
\support\tools\deploy.cab

You also can get this tool from the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/deploytool

More detailed information for your reference:

Thanks for understanding.

Well it's to late for that. The image was made 6-months ago, therefore; It
is the Image that I have to work with. I can't create clone, since that
drive is permanently messed up and will be trashed. Also, for this Image, I
did not use ghost, but instead used Acronis True Image. I found that it
works better across the network than Ghost.

Most likely the system/boot volume letters at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices don't match or were changed
during the cloning process. It can be changed by network access or
mounting the drive in another Windows 2000 machine and changing the value.

You should be able to resolve this by following these instructions:

Unable to log on if the boot partition drive letter has changed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249321

You will have to access the drive over a network, or slave it in another
Windows 2000/XP machine and use Regedt32 to do the changes.

Some report that simply booting the computer with a Windows 98 Boot Disk
and using FDISK /MBR command fixes the problem. Others say it doesn't
, easy enough to try.

That is what I ended up doing. The changes wouldn't stick, but after doing
it on a few partitions (when slaved), some were able to stay in tact as I
rebooted. That was a scary deal.

Thanks, the article was good... but I got it done before reading it. I will
archive this for a future time.
Thanks again.
