virtual memory alert

I have had my laptop for over 2 years and never had this message before. I
am getting an alert that my virtual memory is low and asking if I want to
rezize it. Does anyone know what this means and what might be causing it to
suddenly appear? Thanks.

Usually this means that something running in the background is using up all
your resources. It can be malware or legitimate. So, to start your
troubleshooting:

1. The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

2. The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

3. If you can't answer #1 and the machine is clean, manage your startup:

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

Do you have limited free disk space on your C partition?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

Hope this helps.

I have had my laptop for over 2 years and never had this message before.  I

There is more than one virtual memory message you might see, so it is
important to specify the exact wording if you can.

Otherwise you will get responses to all different kinds of virtual
memory messages which may not apply to your situation at all.

Depending on the message, it may not be an error message exactly, but
an informative message possibly easily rectified.

While your at it, how much physical RAM is in your system? 256K,
512K, 1M, 4M, etc.

How much free space is on your boot drive?

What is your XP Service Pack level?

Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance - Settings,
Advanced, Virtual memory - Change...is the Custom or System managed
radio button selected?
