virtual memory

can anyone help me with virtual memory? Every time I turn on my computer, it
says virtual memory is low & is adding memory. It seems to take forever & my
computer is running SLOW! Can I remove some games or something? Will that
help? I don't really understand virtual memory.
Thanks puppytina

Tina,

Right-click MY COMPUTER | PROPERTIES | ADVANCED tab

Click the SETTINGS button under PERFORMANCE

SET a max of 1.5 times the max of your memory

Just close the dialog boxes

Gerry

What is the CPU and how much RAM does the computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on ther Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Hope this helps.

"Virtual memory" is fake memory. It's an area on your disk where the system
rolls out the contents of real memory to make room for the execution of an
application. The system will roll back in this saved application later.

If you have many applications open at the same time, they obviously won't
all fit in real memory, so the system dumps an application to the hard
drive. If the disk allocation is too small, the system first has to allocate
more space to accomodate the roll-out.

There are several ways to mitigate this condition.
1. Let the system manage virtual memory (see "HELP")
2. Get more real memory to minimize the need to roll-out an open
application.
3. Limit the number of applications open at one time.

Note: Even if you allow the system to manage virtual memory, and you do
nothing about your existing minimal real memory, the system will spend a
great deal of time rolling-out and rolling-in the applications on which you
are working.

-- Thanks for your help, went to my computer, properties, advance tab=clicked
settings & under performance, but that's where I get messed up, only get 4
items & not sure which to do. comes up
1. let windows decide
2.adjust for best appearance
3. adjust for best performance.
4. custom

now it doesn't tell me what to do in any of them for a setting max of 1.5
times the max of my memory? Don't know how to do it. don't see any max to
set!

select custom
then enter 2 for
initial size and
1150 for max.

then click set
and reboot and
enjoy.

btw: if you have multiple
disks or partitions,
be sure to only have
1 (one) vm assigned
to only one partition.

afterwards, go to
microsoft.com and

download / install a
freeware called
pagedefrag.

then set it to run at
every boot time.

Your Commit Charge limit is less than your peak. No
wonder you're having performance problems. The limit
is the sum of total memory + paging file. For your system
1.28GB is correct as it equals your 512MB of RAM plus
768MB of paging file (virtual memory). Your peak usage
is 1.87GB. That's why it needs more virtual memory.
How much free space is on your hard drive? If that's
insufficient, XP will struggle trying to find more room
for the paging file.

For your usage, 512MB of RAM is clearly insufficient.
What you really need is another 512MB of RAM to go to
1GB. Your present 512GB is probably 2 x 256MB, so
the best bet is to replace that with 2 x 512MB, or even
2 x 1GB to go to 2GB. Your system will have a major
performance gain by going to 2GB.

multiple disks = more than one hard drive

Something looks wrong with your figures! The peak should be less than the
limit. Please post new figures.

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are you using Live Onecare or Windows Defender?

What other anti-virus and anti-spyware software are you using?

What about Event Viewer reports?

Please tell me what btw means. want to select custom like you said, but do
not know what you mean by multiple disks or partition means. thanks

"btw" is short for
by-the-way.

-------------------

if you only have
one disk with 1
partition, like the
c drive, then you
can disregard
my concern.

------------------

however, some computers
have two, three or more
partitions.

and some people make
a page file on each of the
partitions.

but only 1 is needed.

use the sizes I gave
you, press the set
button and reboot.

ok,got it,now when I go to my computer & click on properties, then advance
tab,I go to settings under performance then custom. but I don't see anywhere
to enter 2 for initial size ans 1150 for max? all I see is a list of things
to check & they don't say anything about putting any numbers in. I am at
visual effects? is that right? If so, what do I do now? Don't see what you
said. Am I suppose to go to the next advance & open memory usage to set it? I
have "programs" highlighted , do I go there? Afraid to go there without
knowing what I am doing?
I'm sorry I have to ask so many question, I.m just not that sure of what I'm
doing! Thanks Again!!! Puppytna

At that point you have a window titled "Performance Options". It has three
tabs on it labled...
Visual Effects
Advanced
Data Execution Prevention

Click on the "Advanced" tab. After doing so, that tab has three boxed in
areas; the bottom one is labled "Virtual Memory" and has a "Change" button
on it. Push the "Change" button.
_______________

Now you have a page titled "Virtual Memory" and it is giving you a number of
options...

A. It lets you select a drive (if you have more than one)

B. It lets you decide how to handle virtual memory (the "page file") on
the drive you select. The options are...

1. Custom size
2. System managed size
3. No paging file (you don't want that)

If you check the "Custom size" you'll be able to enter the values you want.
but I don't see anywhere to enter 2 for initial size ans 1150 for max?
