Virtual CD / CD to disk image utility

I want to run make a program from a CD image on my hard drive so that I
don't have to find and insert the CD-ROM every time.

Found a link to BlindWrite on this newsgroup but then found it isn't
freeware.

Found DiskDump, but it requires installation of Adaptec ASPI Driver 4.60
(1021).
The webpage says "Newer versions do NOT work correctly !" I was reluctant
to install it, thinking I might overwrite newer software, but I did it
anyway.
http://www.geocities.com/ddumpfrontend/download.htm

Will installing this driver on XP cause any problems? I compared my
\windows\system and \windows\system32 with a backup.
added files:
\windows\system32\wnaspi32.dll
\windows\system32\drivers\aspi32.sys
\windows\system\winaspi.dll
\windows\system\wowpost.exe
I don't see that anything got overwritten by installing this driver.

Is there a better solution for making disk images from CDs?

Have not used this my self, but belive it can do.
It will manage the images but not make them. Need something like CloneCD
(not free) or other to do that.

To the contrary...it is often recommended to install ASPI when XP (or
programs under it) have CD drive related problems. Version 4.60 is the
prefered version.

Be aware that just keeping a CD image on the HD won't necessarily mean that
image is useable. Many times you need to mount the image; i.e., create a
virtual CD drive. Daemon Tools and Nero can do that.

You are on the right track.

I use DiskDump (and the DiskDump Frontend) to create the image. I
used the ForceASPI drivers. Easy to find on Google. This uses a very
stable Adaptec release and will also remove any other APSI drivers to
keep your system clean.

The next step is to mount the image using the Daemon Tools and you'll
see a new drive appear.

I've got three different programs running this way so my kids don't
have to mess with the CD Drive. Works like a charm.

I've tested this on WinXP Home and Win2K Professional.

Since you are using Xp, Alex Feinman ISO Recorder Powertoy can copy
normal CD to ISO image
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/bin/ISORecorderSetup.msi . Just
right click on a CD drive with a CD in it and select Copy CD to image
file. Microsoft does have a well hidden util to mount the image as a
drive but I do not recommend it. Another poster recommended Daemon
Tool and I would second that.
