Virgin Install of Office 2007 regarding Outlook

I did a virgin install of Office 2007 Enterprise on a new computer. I do not
use Microsoft Exchange. After completion of installation, when I attempted
to open Outlook I was prompted about Exchange. Apparently I did not make the
appropriate selection. Two Error messages that I evenutally encountered are:
"Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The file ......\outlook.ost is not
an offline folder file."

"You cannot delete this Outlook data file. Configuration information in the
file is being copied to your new default data file. You can delete the file
after this information is copied."

Part of the solution is to open the Mail applet in the Control Panel.
Eventually I gave up and did a 100% uninstall of Office 2007. I then
installed Office 2003 and got Outlook running. I then did an upgrade to 2007
and Outlook 2007 ran as expected.

Obiously, I took the path of least resistance and do not know exactly what
was the problem but if anyone has a similar problem and finds this memo, the
information provided herein might be a reasonable starting point.

THE solution. If you'd done that, and created a pst file and set it as the
default delivery location, I don't think you would have had to go through
all the rigmarole of uninstalling, installing Office 2003 and then
upgrading.

With regard to Gorden comment, I did get a PST file working properly with
2007 before doing the reinstalls. I could successfully receive email. The
initial help message that I received that got me going was that a Mail applet
is created in the Control panel. If you know that, you know more than I did
when my problems began.

With the pst file working I had 2 on-going problems. (1) I could not get
rid of Exchange as one of my email accounts. (See comment by Sue Mosher in
a different posting by me. I did not investigate her final comment.)

(2) This is weird but I mention it for completeness. When I received mail
for the first time with 2007, I received 53 junk emails and no good emails.
This ratio was not expected. When I installed Outlook 2003, I saw 48 emails
and 53 junk. Strange!!!!!

I then renistalled 2007 and the 48 dissappeared. I then went back to 2003,
they were back. This time I got smart and exported them to a file before
going back to 2007.

Right now I am sitting with 2007 and having everything work perfectly (my
good emails show up in the Inbox). Whatever caused emails to disappear and
reappear, I may never know. If there is a better way to remove the Exchange
email account, I may never know.

It is better to have it working and not know why than have it not working
and spend the next several days endlessly searching for help or a eurika
moment.

If anyone stumbles upon these messages, you at least know my story. (Have
OUtlook 2003 working perfectly then upgrade.) Yours may be similar or
different. If you can add meaningful help for the next person stumbling upon
this problem, be my guest.

I have tried removing Outlook and reinstalling. Repairing Outlook. Removing Office Small Business and reinstalling...

Mail in the control panel didn't help. I tried to create a new data file, attach it to the Exchange account and then try delete the Exchange account. It simply reattached itself to the POP3's data file.

ARRG. Please help!

As soon as I gave up and posted - I fixed it!!!

I had to boot in Safe Mode, then access Mail in the Control Panel. Throw out everything, create a new profile...

I am finally FREE!!!
