Viewing thumbnails

I can't view thumbnails at all. I have tried running "REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
and "regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll" but none of these work. All I
can see is an image icon for each file. Can anyone help, please?

Maybe you are not in the Thumbnails view.
Open the folder, look at the Icons on the top bar. One is Views (last one on
the right). Click on it. Click on Thumbnails.

Already in "Thumbnails" view. Same problem occurs in "Filmstrip" view. The
larger image is fine but the thumbnails along the bottom are just image
icons, not thumbnails.

There is a registry patch at the link below
that *may* solve your problem.

Read the following articles about editing
your registry before proceeding:

Information About Editing the Registry

(322756) How to back up, edit, and restore
the registry in Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003

Scroll down to #17 right column:
"Restore Thumbnail Views In XP":

If you decide to try it, let us know the result.

Tried everything suggested so far. Still no joy! :-( Thanks for all
suggestions so far though.

Causers,

Also, which image file type is causing the problem? A screen shot of a
folder (in thumbnail view) might help us.

To John Inzer and Ramesh.
Do you recall seeing a report of this kind of problem before?
I don't. Something new here? Seeing the larger selected picture in Filmstrip
but not the thumbnails below it. Never seen this problem before.
Our suggested solutions have not worked.
Should we send this problem up somewhere?

The issue new to me...

I would be interested to see the fix
but have no idea who to report it to.

Yves,

Never seen this issue before. Perhaps a file association fix would help?
Interesting question.

Thanks for all your help guys. I've just restarted my computer again and the
problem seems to have fixed itself!! I guess sometimes the simplest answers
are the best. BTW-the problem happened for all image types - tiff, jpg, bmp,
gif etc, and still don't know why it happened.

Thanks again

I'm having the same problem. It came on suddenly, just in the last day or
so, but I can't view images in Thumbnails view or in Filmstrip view. The
images are .jpg's for the most part, a few .gif's and .bmp's. I'm running XP
Pro, SP2. I've tried rebooting and other routine steps like registry cleanup
(using Registry Mechanic and Bug Doctor), and nothing seems to work. I wish
rebooting would do it as it did for Yves Alarie! Help!

As noted below, immediately after downloading and installing the latest
security update, I can no longer see thumbnails or filmstrips. The
options for thumbnails and filmstrips are in the menu for folder
options but they don't work. I can use details and icons. All other
selections result in icon views only. All folders have already been
customized for pictures as I do a great deal of image editing. I've
deleted the registry entries that save folder options and no success.
I restored my registry. I had made a restore point prior to the
security update but when I try to restore it says nothing has changed.
I tried restoring from a point in early December, no luck. I backed
out the security update. Still no luck.

here's a screenshot:

PLEASE help me. Without these options available, my work is nearly
impossible to do.

same problem that started Jan. 6 after updating XP fix for Microsoft
Security Bulletin MS06-001, Vulnerability in Graphics Rendering Engine
Could Allow Remote Code Execution (912919)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-001.mspx
It's not an association error. It affects all image types.
Both filmstrip and thumbnails options are available but they only
present icon views.

trying again to post

after installing the latest security upgrade for XP on Jan. 6, the
folder options for thumbnail and filmstrip no longer work.

I used the above link for missing thumbnails after Office upgrade and
got gif and jpg thumbnails to work but not bmp or png AND filmstrip
doesn't work for any image type

This fixed the problem. Click Start, Run and type in regsvr32
shimgvw.dll, press enter.

ShaBOOM it works now both thumbnails of all types and filmstrips

Many thanks! I found the same tip somewhere, applied it, and now my
Filmstrip and Thumbnail views are working perfectly. What a relief! Thanks
again.

I have the exact same problem, anyone have any joy yet?

==================

Try this, maybe it will restore the option:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"
