I purchase a new P4 Computer running XP home approx 4 wks ago.
I would double click on the JPeg File and it would open in P&FV . Now the
file only opens in Editor mode.
I have tried the following with no luck.

1. Highligted the JPEG, then double Clicked Right mouse and selected P&FV &
Ticked Box to use this application on all JPEGs. Result Failed

2. go to...Start / Run and type:REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL result: Load Library
(“SHIMGVW.DLLâ€) Failed. The system cannot find the specified file

3. go to...Start / Run and type: regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll
result: Load Library (“C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dllâ€) Failed. The system
cannot find the specified file

4. went to C:\Windows\System32 & confirmed that the file SHIMGVW.DLL
actually does exists there

5. tried to disable REGSVR32 /U SHIMGVW.DLL, and then enable REGSVR32
SHIMGVW.DLL ....Results Load Library (shimgvw.dll) Failed. The system cannot
find the specified file

6.Ran: rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen
%1, Result, just made a noise as if to say I can’t find it.

7. i logged on as a 'guest', but this made no difference.

7. I downloaded another copy of P&FV shimgvw.dll from webzilla.com and put
it in System32 file, and remaned the existing file to shimgvw.dllxxx Result
Failed. I also tried the same thing but this time, I got a copy from my work
computer. Result Failed

8. I tried to run Restore Wizard, but Restore failed because it said files
have been changed so there was nothing to restore.

I would really appreciate some help on this one, please

Sounds like a real problem...you say your
images only open in Editor mode. What editor
opens your image files?

I'm just wondering...if you right click an image
file and from the menu choose...Properties...
and on the General tab...if you left click the
"Change" button and from the menu choose
"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"...
OK / Apply / OK...does the image open?

I'm just wondering if it is barely possible that
you omitted the space after the 2 when you
typed REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL in your
run field?

I'm sort of having the same problem but I didn't try all
that! Should I?
I had to do a clean install of Windows XP. Since then,
when ever I double click on a picture it opens in either
P&FV or my default editor program. (MGI photosuite.)
What determines how it opens is what I set the file
association as. If I associate the file with P&FV then it
opens in the viewer, but when I select edit, I'm asked
what program I want to open it with. I choose MGI and it
opens in MGI. But, if I select the box next to "Always
use the selected program to open this type of file," The
next time I double click on a photo, MGI opens. I don't
know how to get it back the way it was before I had to
reinstall Windows XP.
I just want it to preview the photo with the viewer then
open it in MGI when I select edit.
I've searched in so many help files it's ridiculous. NONE
of them give me the answer I need.
It's obviously not a setting in the file association
menu. Can someone tell me what to do?
thanks, dawn

If you wish to preview your image files in
Windows Picture And Fax Viewer...

Right click an image file and from the menu...
choose...Properties...

On the General tab...left click the "Change"
button...

From the list...choose...Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer / OK / Apply / OK...

If you wish MGI PhotoSuite to open when you
left click the Edit button...read the following:

How to open your choice of image editors when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

IMPORTANT: This message contains information
about modifying the registry. Before you modify the
registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem
occurs. For information about how to back up, restore,
and edit the registry, click the following link to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

===========================================

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without
the quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will
see your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the path to your program choice:

"C:\Program Files\??????????\???.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax
Viewer but if you left click the Edit button...your image
editing program opens..

Good luck.

John, thanks for your suggestions:
1.I am using MS Photo Editor which came with XP home Ed
2.Yes, I typed REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL correctly, many times;
and it still says Load Library (shimgvw.dll) Failed. The system cannot
find the specified file.

3. And yes I tried to right click an image file , then ..Properties...then
General tab..
then left click the "Change" button and then select "Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer"...
OK / Apply / OK... but the image does NOT open, but this time when I
select a JPEG Image and click R button,
I noticed new wording ..ie "PREVIEW" appears & it is in Bold, and the OPEN
( which was associated with the MS Photo Editor) is no longer there.
When I double click Preview, nothing happens, as if it can't associate with
the programme.

I also noticed that if I go to Control Panel, display, & select a DESKTOP
from the std list many DESKTOP displays don't work anymore.
Also when I go the SCREEN SAVER and select a Std Screen saver, they all
work, but when I select "My Picture show" this doesn't work
anymore even though I have JPEG's in the MY PICTURES folder. I guess it's
all related.

Any other ideas, and would it be a good idea to reload XP from the disk, &
could this have an effect on other files and programmes, such as Word, Excel,
Visio..etc
I'm a bit scared to do this, because I've heard about the nightmares that
this could cause.

Still stressed.

Quite frankly...I think you need an onsite tech to
help you clear this up.

You may have a virus...you may have a corrupted
user account or it could be some other problem.

A reinstall of Windows XP may be the solution...
before attempting a reinstall be sure to back up
all of your important files on CDs.

John, I'm hesitant about doing an XP Repair, please think hard, there must be
something else I can try.
I had a look at Registry and the appropriate HKEY was there
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview
@="{e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}"

The fact that when I run REGSVR32 /U SHIMGVW.DLL, & REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL &
get the following error "Load library ("shimgvw.dll") failed, the system
cannot find the specified file ( although i have confirmed that the file is
there), this must mean that the file is corrupt. But how do I load another
copy. I tried to load another file from work but it made no difference.
Many thanks for your efforts todate...Last chance.

This is a troublesome problem and I do not have
the answer.

Before you replaced the SHIMGVW.DLL file with
the new file from work did you first rename your
SHIMGVW.DLL to SHIMGVW.OLD?

Is your SHIMGVW.DLL file located in your
"C:\Windows\system32" folder?

Also... you can download a copy from the following site;
http://www.dlldump.com/filelistings/s.shtml

Maybe installing Windows XP SP2 would
improve the issue but I cannot guarantee it.
Personally, I plan to wait a while on SP2...
all I can say is good luck.

Yes John, I've already tried your suggestions with no luck. As you suggested
, I think I will wait to load SP 2, and then take it from there.
Once Again Many thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated.... Regards
