Viewing thousands of files on Network Share

Got a NT4.0 server that has 50,000 files in one folder
(3rd party app puts them all in one folder)
When trying to open that folder from WinXP Pro it takes 5
minutes to open and succeeds only half the time.
Tried bumping up the RAM on WinXP to 1GB but doesn't help.
Any suggestions?

JC,

this is not a performance issue. There is a defect. Therefore
increasing the RAM will not solve the problem.

You'll have to work thoroughly through the networking setup and
make sure everything is working properly.
