Viewing Excel spreadsheet

,I have created a website using Front Page 2003 and in it have an Excel
spreadsheet. When a user using a browser, clicks on the Excel spreadsheet it
opens just fine. Then if they make a change and go to file, close in IE, it
will prompt to save it to the web server site, and if click cancel, it then
offers to save it to the local machine. I do not want it to offer to save it
to the Web server site only to the local machine. What am I doing wrong or
how can I make this happen?

Thanks,

Joe

The file should be opening in Excel, not in IE. So you need to close & save
it in Excel.

I assume that's because it was originally opened on the server, therefore it
is trying to save it back to the server (which can't happened unless you
have the logon details).

I think that's just the way Excel works (saving back to the location it was
opened from), since it is Excel controlling the "save" function - not the
web site, Frontpage or the browser.

If you want users to save to different location tell them to go to File >
Save As (as per normal operation of the application).

Thank you for the explanation, however when I open Word documents, PDF's and
the like on a web site, I have never seen it asking me to save it back to the
web server. Do you know if I need to do something special in the links such
as www.webdomain.com/excelspreadsheet.xls or something like that?

Thanks,

Joe

Sorry, I can't replicate your problem....

I have uploaded a sample xls file to my site, I browse to the file, the
browser asks "Do you want to Open or Save this File" I click "Open" and it
opens in Excel within the browser like with PDF/Adobe does.

If I click File (on the browser - IE) the only option is "Save As" so
there's nothing to suggest its trying to save back to the server. The Save
As comes up with the Save box giving you the choice to save the file
whereever you want.

Even if I make some changes, then Close the Browser it prompts with the Save
As dialogue so I can choose where to save it.
I get a "Save this file? Yes/No/Cancel" box but nothing makes it try and
save back to my web server.

Thanks. I will try some other sites that I have and see if I can replicate
the problem.

Thanks for your efforts, I really appreciate it.
