When I open a file I get a toolbar on the left side of my window showing
shortcuts to certain places (like my documents). How do I customise this to
show say "my pictures" or other folders?

Thank you for the quick reply - I am using XP and that didn't work. I just
got a menu with Find, rename properties etc. Also when I right click the
item to delete it from the places bar it comes up with "what's this".

Christine,

The only way you can cutomize "Other Places" is to change the type of
folder.

Other Places appears on the left in what is called the Common Tasks Pane or
just Common Tasks.

Other Places overview
Windows folders help you quickly find and work with files on your computer,
network, or the Internet. Every folder contains a list of links called Other
Places, which can help you find the places you need, such as My Computer, My
Network Places, and your Desktop. Depending on which folder you are working
in, Other Places may also provide links to the My Documents and Shared
Documents folders.

Folder types:
Documents
Pictures
Photo Albums
Music
Music Artist
Music Album
Video

The different folder types have different Common Tasks. Video and Music
folders have things like Play All. Picture and Photo folders have View As a
Slideshow.

The Customize tab
Allows you to change the picture that appears on a folder in Thumbnails
view, change the folder icon, and choose a new template for a folder. Folder
templates contain task and information links for specialized files, such as
pictures or music files.

With the folder open...
Click View, click Customize this Folder.

With the folder closed...
Right click the folder, click Properties, click the Customize tab.

Then...
do one or all of the following:

Select a folder template
When you choose a template from Use this folder type as a template, you
apply specific features to your folder, such as specialized task links and
viewing options for working with pictures and music.

To apply a folder template to all of the folders contained within your
customized folder, select the Also apply this template to all subfolders
check box.

Choose a picture for your folder
You can choose the picture that identifies a folder in Thumbnails view.
When you click:

* Choose Picture, you can find the picture you want to use to identify the
folder.
* Restore Default, the last four image files you modified in the folder will
be used to identify it.

Change the folder icon
Click Change Icon to change the graphic that represents the folder in all
views except Thumbnail view.

Notes
To open My Documents, double-click the My Documents icon on your desktop.
If your folder does not contain image files, Windows does not generate
folder pictures in Thumbnails view.

You cannot customize the My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music folders.
However, you can customize the folders they contain. ]]

It has certainly taught me a lot about folders but I am still not able to get
a link to my pictures in "my places" bar. Maybe it is something to do with
Office? Christine.

Christine,

I never use Other Places for anything so I had to look around to figure this
out.

You won't see My Pictures listed in Other Places in My Documents. Probably
because the My Pictures folder is IN the My Documents folder, so you can
access it from there already.

My My Documents folder has Desktop, My Computer and My Network Places listed
in Other Places.

My My Pictures folder has My Documents, My Computer and My Network Places
listed in Other Places.

You have to open a folder that's in My Pictures to see My Pictures listed in
Other Places.

For example, in my folder...

C:\Documents and Settings\Wesley P. Vogel\My Documents\
My Pictures\CHEVYS

My Pictures, My Computer and My Network Places are listed in Other Places.

That's true for any of the other folders that I have in My Pictures.

Also, any other Pictures or Photo Albums folders that you have, no matter
where they are located, on the Desktop for example, will have My Pictures
listed in Other Places.

Post back if the Common Tasks Don’t Match Folder Type, there is a fix.

Never mind, here it is...

<quote>
Common Tasks Don’t Match Folder Type
by Keith Miller

For reasons unknown, some users find that drives or system folders display
the wrong tasks relative to the folder contents. The C: drive may display
music tasks; The ‘My Music’ folder may display picture tasks, etc. While
user-created folders allow access to the ‘Customize’ tab in the ‘Properties’
dialog, drives and system folders do not give you this option.

There are two solutions to this problem....
