Thanks for that. Did not work. No audio at all using windows media
encoder. I am beginning to suspect that I do not have the necessary
codec. XP video decoder checkup utility tells me that all N have is
Nero DVD decoder, Nero Video Decoder, Ulead mpeg Video Decoder and
Ulead DVD Video decoder, none of which, it says, are suitable. Can
anyone comment?

Welcome to the frustrating world of video editing.
If you get no audio with Windows Media Encoder
the original file may be corrupted and that could
account for the original problem you had in Movie
Maker.
Try converting the file with the freeware SUPER
and maybe you will have a better result:
SUPER © Simplified
Universal Player Encoder & Renderer
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
(the mirror download site is faster)
The freeware VLC Media Player should be able to
play your MPEG files.
VLC Media Player

And finally...if you really want to install codecs...the
following free package may be worth a try.
CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)

Good Luck...
