Video Issues w/Vista (gaming)

James

I'm getting a very low framerate and a very choppy/laggy feeling when
playing a full screen game in Vista. My system:

XP Pro (primary hard drive)
Vista Ultimate RC 2 (secondary hard drive)
nVidia geForce 6800 (256 MB)
2 GB RAM
Dell 20" 2001 FP running at 1600x1200 (primary, where game is played) via
DVI
Dell 19" 1905 FP running at 1280x1024 (secondary) via VGA

Primary Hard Drive: Samsung HD160JJ/P
Secondary Hard Drive: Maxtor 6L200M0

Game in question is installed on the Primary Hard Drive AND Secondary Hard
Drive, but running from either has the same results. I'm booting onto the
secondary drive, and all other applications seem to be running fine/quickly.

When I boot onto the XP Drive, the game typically runs at roughly 55-60FPS.
No problems whatsoever, very good experience. On the Vista drive, I'm
looking at roughly 20FPS, so the decrease is not insignificant. Running in
Full Screen (1600x1200) on the Primary Monitor.

I'm in desperate need of things to check to confirm what's causing this
problem. Anything I can possibly try at this point would be a beautiful
thing. Do I potentially just need a video card upgrade? Is that the likely
culprit? Wouldn't think so, considering how perfectly it runs in XP Pro.
Open to *anything* at this point, including hardware upgrades.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The most likely cause of this is nVidia's drivers. It's probably safe to
assume that Vista would be maybe 10-15% slower, but that kind of performance
hit certainly isn't normal.

I've recently blogged about the state of nVidia's drivers, they really are a
mess at the moment:

I second that complaint. FS2002 is a slide show, but smooth as butter
in XP. Same settings.
GEforce 6800GT, 1 gig ram.
