I encountered an error using norton systemworks
yesterday, and rebooted my system. Windows XP ran
scandisk prior to booting the OS, and i noticed that a
file was deleted. now, when i boot my computer, it goes
through the bios and Windows splash screen, then all i
get is the mouse cursor. No desktop. I have attempted
safe mode and i get the same screen, except that it does
show "Safe Mode" in each corner and the windows build
info across the top, but the rest is a black screen. i
have info on the hard disk that has not been backed up,
and i cannot access it from my home network on my
laptop. I need to recover or replace this file. Help!

Just a guess.
Are you using Symantec's pcAnywhere?
If so, it may have replaced xp's default logon interface...msgina.dll.
