video file insert and play

I copied a video file off the internet which had a file
extension .asx . I tried to insert it into a
powerpoint presentation by following the instruction in
the help menu. I down loaded it and played it in my
Windows media player 7.1 and it played fine. Since that
worked I followed the instruction further and tried to
insert the file into a slide so it could be played. When I
clicked on the video file icon on the slide it would not
play.

So how can I import video files and get them to play in a
powerpoint slide show?

If I have to convert the file into another format, how do
I convert them from the asx to something the Windows media
player will play in Powerpoint?

Thanks

Microsoft Windows Media metafiles(.asx extension) are text files that
provide information about a file stream and its presentation.
Open a .asx file with a notepad,you can see like this:
<ASX Version="3.0">
<TITLE>PresenterSoft MediaEasy Overview</TITLE>
<ENTRY>
<Ref href = "myvideo.wmv" />
<AUTHOR>Author Info Here</AUTHOR>
</ENTRY>
</ASX>

so myvideo.wmv is the actual video file you want to insert.
