Video Effects problem in XP Pro SP-2

A small problem has come out of nowhere with my video effects settings in XP
Pro (SP-2). Suddenly, for no apparent reason, task bar windows will start
animating (sliding) when restored and minimized, an effect I really don't care
for at all.

I know of two places to control this behavior in XP:
System->Advanced->Performance->Settings, and on the Display applet,
Appearance->Effects.

On the Performance->Settings tab, I have Custom, and only four selections
checked. They are:

1) Show shadows under menus
2) Show window contents while dragging
3) Smooth edges of screen fonts
4) Use visual styles on windows and buttons

I've had this regime for ages, and no problems until just recently.

On the Appearances->Effects page, I have the "Use the following transition
effects" box UNchecked, and clear type selected as the screen font smoother.

The other two boxes checked there are: show shadows under menus and show window
contents while dragging. The other two are UNchecked.

Here is what I notice: When the unwanted animation suddenly starts, I go have a
look at the Display applet Appearance->Effects page. Something has modified
the first checkbox in a very odd way. Instead of NO check mark (desired), and
instead of a check, the box has a green square in it, slightly smaller than the
checkbox itself. Clearing that checkbox completely clears up the problem
immediately. However, something is periodically resetting this, and it's
become a nuisance.

I updated to the very latest nVidea drivers in an attempt to resolve this, but
that has not done the trick (did not expect it to, really, but the driver
upgrade did not hurt either). It's also not something that happens as a result
of a reboot. It can seemingly begin at any time, with no warning or apparent
trigger. It can be fine, and then altered while the computer is unattended (on
resuming activity the behavior has changed). The computer is clean, well
defended, and physically secure.

Anyone have any ideas?

Get TweakUI from Microsoft, install it and tweak your machine down a bit
more.

XP System Restore could do the trick, did you try this effective tool
already? Just roll back your system to a previous date before issue started.
