Video Conference with MSN Messenger 6.0 and LinkSys Router BEFSR41

Hi,

I have been experencing problems with the Video Conference on MSN
Messenger 6.0 running on Windows XP machine and LinkSys Router BEFSR41
with the latest Firmware installed.

I am using Static IP address on my Windows XP machine. Network
Services is running where upnp is enabled on my machine. Pc is
connected to the router and router is connected to the cable broadband
modem.

In the router, upnp is enabled.

I have contacted the LinkSys support and one person is saying to me to
use Port Triggering with the below settings:

Application Name Trigger Port Range Incoming Port Rane
MSN 6891 - 6900 6891 - 6900
MSN 1863 - 1863 1863 - 1863
MSN 5190 - 5190 5190 - 5190
MSN 6901 - 6901 6901 - 6901

Video conferencing is still not working. I cannot see the other person
video and Audio. Sometime my video will go but Audio will always go to
the other pc.

Again if i directly connect to the cable modem, i can run Video
Conference with out any problem.

Another person from LinkSys advised me to use Port Range Forwarding
with the below settings and remove the Port Triggering.

TCP 6891 - 6900
IN TCP 1863
IN UDP 1863
IN UDP 5190
IN UDP 6901
IN TCP 6901

By having the above, still i cannot start the video conferencing. And
also MSN Messenger is crashing as well.

I would be really thankful to you if someone have a look this issue
and advise me on the correct path.

Hi Zahid

These are the setting I use with my linksys BEFW11S4
router I do not use a firewall
other than the router you must have latest firmware,
you must have UPnP Enable on the router to get the Internet Gateway to
appear in view network connections
And the router to appear in My Network Places
UPnP Enable/Disable radio button in on the password tab in the router
setting,

I have found that with lisksys routers is that you must a have universal
plug and play installed as well internet gateway device discovery and
control client, go to control panel, add or remove programs, windows
components, networking services, click on details and install
if they are already installed in control panel go to, administrative tools,
services, and look for universal plug and play device, and see if it started
if it is set to start automatic change to manual right click on it go
properties startup type and from drop down box select manual and do the same
for SSDP Discovery service you may have to reboot after reboot you should
see your router in my network places and in view network connections you
will see internet gateway if this fails to work try uninstalling and
reinstalling universal plug and play and internet gateway device discovery
also if you right click on the Internet Gateway and go to properties,
settings, and delete all the memsgs settings
you mite try disabling QoS packet Scheduler under Local area connection
properties

Post back and let me know how you get on

Hi,

First of all, many thanks for your reply.

1- The Firmware I have installed from Linksys for the router BEFSR41
is 1.45.6, Jun 24 2003 which is the latest one I think they have.

2- UPnP is enabled on the router and I am using Port Fordwarding as
the below settings.

3- I can see now the Interent Gateway in Network Connections.

4- I did install the "universal plug and play" and "internet gateway
device discovery" from Networking Services. However, when i look in
the Wondows Component Wizard and Networking Services, the size is
0.3MB and when i click on Details button, from the list, only
Universal Plug and Play got 0.2MB size and rest of three, Internet
Gateway Device Discovery and control Client, RIP Listener and Simple
TSP/IP Services are checked but 0.0MB.
I am not sure this should be like that or not ???

5- I went to administrative tools, services, and found universal plug
and play device host, and saw it was started and was Automatic. I have
changed this to manual and after restarting the machine, it is not
running now. Also found that, SSDP service is started and Manual.

6- I can see my router in my network places and in view network
connections I can also see internet gateway.

7- I am not sure what do you mean by " delete all memsgs settings ".
Do you mean by Advance Settings under there. I can see a list of
Services and four of them are checked as msnmsgr, msnmsge, msnmsgr(19
and msnmsgr(19
There are lots of others as DNS, finger, FTP, HTTP etc...
I did not uncheck or delete the above four as I am not sure.

8- QoS packet Scheduler is also unchecked.

After doing all the above, believe me it is still not working and same
problem. My Video going to the other side and sound going there but
badly cutting. No Video and Audio is coming on my PC. Black screen
will come in the video box and no sound.

I hope I have explained all the settings from my PC. Please let me
know what should I do next.

Regards

Zahid

Hi,

As u suggested I have removed the Port Fordwarding from the router
settings and UnPn was enabled.

After that i tried to have video conference and again it is one sided.
I did try to have just voice conversion it is again one sided and
video conversion which is also one sided. The other person can see me
and hear me but i can't.

Not sure what to do next. The firmware version i am using is :
1.45.6, Jun 24 2003

The Linksys people sent me a new firmware which i did install but it
went worse as i did not manage to have even one sided voice. So i put
the previous firmware version again.

Please let me know what to do next.

no, i am not runnig any firewall. Infect the firewall option in XP is
also disabled.

If I remove router, and directly connect to the Cable Modem, every
thing runs fine....so this is just the Linksys router....

Hi Zahid

You mite try Enabling QoS packet Scheduler under Local area connection,
properties
As with some linksys routers it will work with and some it will not?
