video codec?

Hello

I'm sorry I'm posting this here -- I'm sure it's the wrong newsgroup, but I
couldn't find a NG for Windows Media Player. Proably just didn't look hard
enough! I am using WIndows XP, though.

So if you want to just tell me if there is a WMP NG, I'll shut up and go
there.

Otherwise, does anyone know if there is a way to tell what video codec
package(s) is required to play any given video? I've got a couple of .wmv
clips that I can't view -- they just show up as a black screen when played.
I can hear audio, but no video, so I'm assuming it's a codec problem , but I
don't know what to download.

If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction, I'd really
appreciate it. Thanks in advance!!

Thank you for the response, but this site has basically the same problem --
a whole mess of codecs to download, but no way for me to tell which is the
right one.

Find GSpot - it will tell you what codecs are required.
