video clip problems

I've got a link to an avi file, when you click on it, it downloads, but then a Real Player error window comes up and says that Real Player cannot find the file it just downloaded. I don't get it. If I right click on the link instead and select "save target as", then it's fine. I just open the file after it downloads and Real Player plays it fine. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, .avi is a Windows Media Player extension.
Realplayer extensions are .ra .rm .ram and so on.

Thanks, Steve. So, what should I do? Many people,
including myself, have Real Player as their default media
device. It wants to open all media files, including AVI
files. And, I'm not sure that that was the problem.
Judging from the error message I get - "Real Player
cannot find the file____.avi", I think there might be
another issue. It's weird because Real Player just
downloaded the file, so how could it not find it?

Find the avi file in your temporary internet files, ( or find one somewhere
else in your machine ) right click on it, Select Open with, in the list that
displays, scroll down and find Windows Media player. Click once to select
it, check the box ""Always open files of this type" and then click OK.
Media player should then be the default player for all avi files.

Make sure the file name is a 8 character or less with no spaces, etc.

Does the file work with Windows Media Player?

Can you provide the URL to the page with a link to this file?

It works fine in Windows Media Player. In fact, it also
works fine in Real Player. like I said, if I open it
manually, it works fine either way. However, when
someone downloads it, Real Player opens, attempts to
play, and says "cannot find the file ____.avi - have you
moved the file?, etc.".

It is more than eight characters long and has spaces.
Why does that make a difference? Thanks.

Thanks, but I have no problem playing the file either in
Real Player or in Windows Media. The problem is when
other people have tried to download it (I've seen this
myself), it downloads fine, Real Player opens, attempts
to play, and says "cannot find file (name of my
file.avi) - have you moved the file? etc.). I don't get
it. Thanks for trying to help - I'd love to find an
answer.

Not all applications can handle spaces in filename via the internet, and can result is broken
hyperlinks for site visitors.

I want to know if the file from the web works in Windows Media Player, not by clicking on it
directly on your computer.

Ah OK.
That's an individual computer setting.
The save location is not a constant or given in every computer, it depends
on where the user has set his default "Save to" location.

I would recommend adding text nest to the links that says:
Right click, select "Save target as" and the tell them to save to the
Desktop and then double click to play.

Yes, the file works straight from the website,
downloaded, and played with Media player.

Ok, then just try renaming without any spaces in the filename.
