Gateway staff has told me that a analog card and software... is needed to duplicate a video cassette tape to digital DVD format. I have a Presario 6000. Do I need to buy the additional products to convert formats??? A friend also has this prob lem with a compac mulitmedia computer. NO signal from just attaching the cable. ?????

You'll need to purchase Plus! Digital Media Edition to accomplish your goal.

Here is a very good and detailed guide (scroll down and skip any sections
you don't need - it starts with what sort of hardware you need in your
computer to do the job!)

(sorry there are pop-ups)

If you only have a few tapes to convert it's cheaper to get them done by a
company that does this (just watch out for the sharks).

You need a video capture card in order to hook the VCR to the
computer. That will enable you to play your video tapes through the
VCR to the computer and then record to DVD digitally. Not sure where
exactly you can find one at the best price, but a Google search should
bring some good results. Also, if you live in the US, you can try
chain stores such as Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.

Also: Make sure you have lots of hard drive space and that it's
formatted to NTFS. FAT-32 is restricted to a file size of
4 Gbyte which can easily be exceeded when recording movies to DVD.
