Video Card Driver Weirdness

Okay, Its me again...

I am trying to figure out if this is a Windows XP problem or an nVidia
problem...Apologies if this is the wrong newsgroup.

I have an nVidia GeForceII Ti. (I know its a little old, but I can't afford
the upgrade to the 6800OC as of yet...LOL) on Windows XP Pro.

When I install WinXP Pro, the OS uses the Windows version of the nVidia
Driver "nVidia GeForce". I install Plus!, and I can see all of the nifty 3D
Screen Savers and such. 3D Games work as well.

The weirdness happens when I install the latest Drivers from nVidia. After
installing them, I can no longer see 3D objects (Screen Savers and Games).
Everything else is fine (i.e. Desktop, non-3D Screen savers). I think it is
the OpenGL portion of the drivers? I roll back the drivers to the Windows
installed version, and all is fine again.

Does Windows XP Pro not like the drivers from nVidia? As I don't get the
"These Drivers are not Tested (certified?)..." warning, I assume that they
are good.

Sorry for the long windedness of this post. Trying to be as detailed as
possible.

Thanks in advance for any help. It is much appreciated!

Hi, Rick. Oddly enough I had the exact same thing happen with *my* old
Ti4200. I'd turn on the machine and there I'd be with 4-bit color.
Uninstall the Nvidia drivers and all would be well. Install Nvidia
drivers, and back to 4-bit color. I tried various versions of the
drivers, too.

Guess what the answer was - you won't like it, but the answer was that
the card was dying. You need to replace yours, too. Sorry. Since that
isn't a gaming box, I replaced the old card with an Nvidia GeForce 4
MMX that I got for around $40usd.

Good luck,

Malke

Thanks for the reply, Malke!

I had a sinking feeling that it might be the card itself. This one has been
pretty reliable up until now. Guess I know what I'll spend my Tax Refund on
... !!

Heh heh. There's nothing like a fresh, fast video card. You know you
want it. ;-)
