video capture device was not detected

I have a Sony DCR-TRV320 which I connect to the computer
via firewire. The camera is recognized by WinXP (home
edition) but not by any editing software. The messages
are as follows: "A video capture device was not detected"
and "Either no video capture driver is installed in this
system or no device is connected".
A week ago this was not a problem. There have been no
hardware changes (nothing added, nothing removed). A
trial version of Adobe Premiere has expired but other than
that there have been no software changes. Even after
Premiere was uninstalled the problem continued.
