I’m trying to fix a friends computer. Initially they were having problems
with e-mail and I was able to fix that so late last night I started to
defragment the system. It was taking longer than I thought so I stopped it
using the STOP button (as I didn’t want to listen to the scraping/hard drive
sounds during the night). This morning when I turned the system on, I get
the following message:
“Windows could not start. Because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM\vgaoem.fon. You can attempt to repair this file by starting
Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select ‘r’ at the first
screen to start repair.â€
I entered “vgaoem.fon†on the Microsoft site and came up with the following
link which seams to describe my problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315338
The system is a desktop unit, made in June 2003. It is running Windows XP
Home Edition, has 160GB HD & 512MB RAM. The O/S is original to the system
and has the typical anti-virus & adware/spyware software on it.
When I follow the instructions of the link above, things proceed as expected
until I get to step #8 when it gives the “expand†instruction. Instead of
getting the desired result as shown by the link above, I get the following
results:
I enter “expand d:\i386\vgaoem.fo_c:\windows\systemâ€
Result – “The system cannot find the file or directory specified.â€
I wasn’t sure if a “space†was supposed to be entered after the “fo_†so I
also tried it with a space there:
I enter “expand d:\i386\vgaoem.fo_ c:\windows\systemâ€
Result – “Access is deniedâ€
I also tried entering “WINNT†instead of “windows†in the expand line but
the same results as above occurred.
I have my own desktop unit (very similar to one I’m trying to fix) so I
copied the missing file “vgaoem.fon†onto a floppy and then tried to use the
following command at the C:\ prompt:
Copy a:vgaoem.fon c:\windows\system
Result – “Access is deniedâ€
Is there something wrong that I’m doing here? I haven’t yet tried taking
the hard drive out of the bad system and using that as a slave in my desktop
(and copying the file in that manner) but I didn’t know if I would get the
same Access Denied response or not.
This is my first post on here so I’m sorry if I have it in the wrong
category or haven’t provided enough information but I would appreciate any
help, thanks.
