VGA drivers keep loading on ATI AIW 9700 pro

Trying to get this #%#$% card to work properly.

1] Removed all ATI software both automatically and manually according to ATI
instructions and emails.
2] Completed a Windows XP repair
3] Reinstalled all Windows updates including SP2 [as my disc is an original
XP pro] - fixed all applications that were erroring out after repair [3 or 4]
4] Downloaded latest Catalyst from 4 days ago
5] Installed Catalyst - no glitches - Norton was disabled.

This is where the problems start....

6] Rebooted - Proper ATI Components detected. Including 2 basic VGA
devices, which doesn't sound right to me. Comes up in 640*480 resolution.
7] Went to screen properties, settings. Only one monitor is shown not 2.
But it shows the card linked to my monitor.
8] Removed both ATI. display adapters [dual monitor] under Device manager.
9] Rebooted and it came up with both monitors and all works fine.
10] Everytime I reboot and it goes back to basic VGA and 640*0480 resolution
with only one monitor showing under screen properties. Try to run catalyst
control panel and I get an error about the drivers being not updated so I
can't run Catalyst.
11] Back to step 7!

What do I need to do next?

It sounds like a registry issue to me.

Thoughts..........

I stopped using the Catalyst drivers a while ago because of major problems.
Instead I downloaded the drivers and control panel from the ATI web site and
use them only. Problem was passed to ATI tech Support but have yet to
receive an answer.

Thx Jerry...

Do you also use the full DAO, MMC and remote Wonder? As these also have to
be installed after all the preliminary drivers.

I did some more research last night and it appears that it also may very
well be an XP problem. XP's default video is set to "VGASAVE". Looks like
I'm doing some registry editing/cleaning.... 8-(

Thx.

Have recieved great and personal support [for free] from ATI once I
registered my card and called them. However, before I cud get a final answer
or solution - I resolved to do a system rebuild...[ I was too frustrated.]
Shud be finally tweaked in about 3 weeks!!!! 8-(

So far the "New" install of the drivers, DAO and MMC has been flawless.
Must have been my registry "remnants".

Thx. for your help
